Zidane wins Golden Ball

July 10 2006 at 11:13AM

Berlin - France captain Zinedine Zidane, sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi late in Sunday's World Cup final loss to Italy, won the Golden Ball award for the tournament's best player.

The results were released on Monday morning by Fifa.

Zidane polled 2012 points in the vote by journalists covering the tournament, beating Italians Fabio Cannavaro (1977 points) and Andrea Pirlo (715 points) in the ballot.

Zidane, who put France ahead with a penalty in the opening minutes, was given a red card after slamming his head into Materazzi's chest during the tense second period of extra time.

It was his last act as a professional player.

The French missed Zidane's prowess in the penalty shootout, which Italy calmly won to collect its fourth World Cup title.

Zidane, a former international player of the year and 1998 World Cup champion, announced in June that he was retiring from soccer after the tournament.

Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn won the Golden Ball in 2002. Other previous winners were Brazilians Ronaldo (1998) and Romario ('94), Italy's Salvatore Schillaci ('90) and Argentine great Diego Maradona.

Germany striker Miroslav Klose was the Golden Shoe winner for the tournament's leading scorer. He won with five goals. Ronaldo won the award in 2002 with eight goals. - Sapa-AP

WooHoo!! WHat a World Cup!!! It came and Gone... for most of us... not in Italy yet... Well done Italy!!

I was supporting France by the way... Both teams did superbly well... non stop action.. and a thrilling moments when players from either side is playing right front of the goalie... and thats like 5-6 times that happens in the Final match..

Overall France shud hv won the match, however luck wasnt on their side... thats what football is all about a lil luck.

About Zidane... MUCH MUCH Respect to that legend player. Well thats Zidane for u guys... he delievered quality play and he delievered his temper too... I think he was already upset that his shoulder was injurd and the couch didnt replace him... SO what he do... he send himself off in what he do best.. what a guy!!

The AURA Zidance has is huge... when he has the ball... u will notice that he we have the time to move about looking for the perfect pass... suddenly all other players even moved back and not dare to tackle... giving space... like magic... in the Final Match all the players stopped playing when he was juz sitting down with that injurd shoulder.. everyone noticed and stopped.

I dont think people in France wud be that upset.. as he brought France to the finals... and nearly won France the World Cup wth his header that nearly made a 2-1 win for France..

HAving Zidane sent off.. did not coz much lost as its nearly time for penalty and sending Zidane off made the team roar with might n play stronger.. thats what i see... a uniq retirement style...

Once again Congratulation Italy for the World Cup 2006!!!

ITALY 5 - 3 FRANCE (P)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/[....]all/world_cup_2006/4991652.stm

"Italy are deserved world champions after this narrowest of triumphs over France. In doing so, they buried the ghosts of USA 94 and climbed above Germany as the most successful European team in FIFA World Cup history with four wins. For France and Zidane there was no fairy-tale ending and instead they are left to reflect on a bitter ending to an unexpectedly long adventure."

Zidane probably let his team down, but hey... what a header!

Zidane certainly fulfilled his dream and ended the World Cup with a bang!

Seriously, I've never seen someone fly so far from a headbut...
