No the problem is the free RAM - it is not sufficient. It does not matter what the problem source is (Symbian 9.1 memory management, UIQ3 being bloated and use of different kind of memory chip set from the Symbian 7 devices and code execution method) the problem as seen by the end user is insufficient RAM.

Edit: with my TyTN and Universal I never manage over 32MB RAM free. Having both the K750 and K800 I have to say IMHO the K800 is better

it does matter, wm5 works well enough with 64 mb ram,

adding more ram does not fix the problem with the os, there will still be a memory leak as well as having 128 will do more havoc on your battery, they're not loading them with 64 mb only because ram is expensive (ram is pretty cheap nowadays), they are doing it because 128 uses up too much battery (atm)

Hi all,
I agree with Jah on this one re Ram and whilst Nokia promised me another 5mb Ram on start up on my N93 for early September i am still waiting for it, even though i am not desperate for it but do think it would be nice. My M600i runs smoothly but that is thanks to SwissManger and not over stretching it. We are now faced with a situation where IMO the latest incarnations of Symbian are very different from the ones they follow. The ability to add and run multiple apps with no fear of running out of Ram are long gone IMO. Whilst firmware upgrades may help performance and stability the next generation of smartphones running Symbian are going to need at least 50% more Ram IMO to run smoothly i just hope Nokia and SE are listening as if they don't up the Ram they can kiss my money bye bye. MDA Vario 3/4/5/ here i come.

@darky

Last comment on this subject. The P990 RAM problem has many components hardware and software. If the older memory chip set of the P910 were used the RAM problem would not be as bad. Quote from LISA@CPS from My-symbian "NAND memory does not support Execute-In-Place (XIP), unlike the previously used NOR chips. This means the OS and the built-in applications are loaded to RAM for execution. The result is slower startup and large RAM consumption, because a lot of ROM-based programs run all the time (not only those shown in task managers). The advantage: NAND is cheaper... "

Although i'm now settled with the tytn, i took it on a climb in the lakes this weekend, the camera, even for a 2mp, is awful. Terrible definition on anything other than close-ups. Doesn't compare to the se 2mp cameras. Impossibly fiddly to use when you're holding on to rock!

Have you tried taking pictures with the contrast & sharpening set to 1 (especially the sharpening). It improved the quality of outdoor pictures markedly. I think you can set these in the registry so that they remain the default.

Actually, the original task manager does the same thing as Swiss Man. Pro and with no extra fuss. I was surprised to see that the Swiss Man. Pro doesn't bring anything new except for more info on processes. I was also surprised to see that with 8 apps running (internet with a few tabs in it) the task manager does ok and the phone doesn't slow down or crashes. Great balance in the M600i.

After using the Tytn and P990i for a month now. I've put the P990i in the closet. With all the discussion about Ram, I can say that the Tytn is just easier to use for me period. It runs faster, easier to use with one hand, and sync is so much better.

The only thing is.......Tytn is so ugly and the camera is nowhere near as good as the SE's, but other than that. It is a better device IMO.
