As far as I know, it's not possible to erase these applications. I have only come across someone using a tool to hide the applications from showing in the menu.
I find this extremely rude. In my opinion, stuffing a new PC full of trial applications that you don't want is already unacceptable. But at least you can delete those, or re-install Windows without voiding your warranty. But installing trial apps on your phone that you can't erase, borders on the edge of criminality.

If anyone knows a way to erase these unwanted applications (without rooting the phone), please let us know!

@exokello - thanks a lot, will try that.

Also I have an x10, and also bought the x 10 mini - what's the easiest way to transfer all my 1200 contacts from the x10 to the x10 mini??

Don't have wi fi or data connection, so can't use sony ericson sync or google sync, plus the darn x10 mini doesn't accept the contacts the good old bluetooth way as a single vcf file. ( transferring contacts from my p990 to the x10 was a breeze via bluetooth).. Plus my sim card can't hold more than 200 contacts - so that option is ruled out... anything I am missing?

Use vcardio it lets you export and import contacts via a vcf file,

Given the frequency of updated released by SE, I think we should start a new thread only for updates. Mod please do the needful if you agree.

I have found "Import Contacts" and have used it to transfer contacts (.VCR) and I found it excellent. Google to get the apk - its free.
