I'm on vanilla xp. Could that be the reason why drivers don't load?

I use SP2 on my slightly aged P4 M 1.8 Laptop, seems to run without any hitches, but with the new Microsoft Antispyware, and Norton Antivirus 2005 Premium, both of which get incorporated into the Windows XP SP2 core, I feel very safe from any sort of threat. The only thing about SP2, is Security and Less chances of virus threats.
Infact now Microsoft is incorporating SP2 with their new Windows XP DVD's. All new Windows XP DVD's come with SP2 on them.
