In theory USB 2.0 (480Mbps) should be a bit faster than Firewire 400 (400Mbps), but in practise, usually isn't.
Given the choice, I would always choose a Firewire drive.

And it uses my spare fw port rather than making me remove a usb something...
Hmmmmm.. Best keep my eyes peeled for a 500gb fw400 external hdd then!
Cheers chaps
Oh here's a silly question jools... I assume I have to format the external hdd to os journaled etc? Is that then useable by windows? Atm I seem to be swapping for vista and osx to complete random tasks and I'm bored of burning dvds!
And though itd be cool if the external hdd could be used by both os's!
Cheers

As already mentioned firewire in practice does work out slightly faster - although i have always found the benefits in speed to be minimal therefore I have been unable to justify the extra cost of getting a firewire drive (can anyone explain why they are more?)
Format the drive to the mac os x file system then go and download macdisk:
http://www.macdisk.com/mden.php3 which will allow you to read/and write to any mac formated disks on a windows machine.

Actually OSX does not utilize the full speed of USB.2, I cant remember but I had the same problem and its something to do with the way the code is written or something...il try and look it up later.
Personally just stick to firewire,
