When I got my Orange-branded K700i I had it unlocked and unbranded. Now I want to upgrade the firmware (it's on R2AA003) but SEUS gives me the "not permitted/not approved" message as though my handset is still branded. Does "unbranding" not unbrand a handset completely? In which case, how do I get the firmware updated?

Unfortunately not. The SEUS works out whether a handset is permitted to use the service based on its IMEI. The CDA tells the SEUS which firmware to download, but if the phone is disallowed due to the operator (hence the IMEI), there's no way around it. The CDA only comes into play if the phone is allowed in the first place.
You could try taking it to a service centre, but they might not do it as it has been unbranded, which theoretically voids the warranty. Alternatively, use DaVinci to flash. It'll cost you for a credit (not very much) and you can update to the latest version (R2AY).

Thanks for the info. The moral of that story is probably to buy an unbranded handset in the first place!

Mmm this is really strange and certainly the first time I have heard of SEUS blocking updates by IMEI. On the K700i, SEUS blocked updates based on the firmware CDA settings. I suppose what could have happened is that the company that reflashed your phone forgot to change the CDA settings which is why your phone failed.
What is your current firmware version numbers? If you can provide us with everything displayed on the firmware info page (obviously don't post the IMEI number

) we may be able to pick out the problem.
One final thought is that it could be a problem with SEUS as it is renowned for being unreliable. We had a similar problem/message with the K700i update service earlier in the year and just before they released R2AE033 so it may not be your phone.
If you are really desperate you can always flash your own phone using
http://www.davinciteam.com as this will work with your supplied USB cable.

I have just chatted to a mate of mine who unbranded his orange phone using davinciteam and he is now able to use the update service ok. So this is either a problem with the CDA or SEUS.

@ smjohns
I can assure you it doesn't work based on the CDA, or certainly didn't. I won't go into detail, but I know this for a fact.

Hit another problem now. Got a DaVinci Team credit, but the flash stalls with a "can't transfer block"/"0x00556 error" or something similar.

I think R2AY004 has been finally oficially released!!!!
A friend of mine got his k700 from the Service Center today, and they use R2AY004 in it
This interests me mainly because with this version we can use mp4 as ringtones/alarm

But the problem is that i don't have the cables that is mentioned in the site( the one which looks like a desktop charger) is it possible to update the firmware using the ordinary serial or usb cables
