I'm considering:
X1
the metal-silver walkman W705?
Nokia E72 (late September)
or do I wait all the way till December (NAM release of Satio or something better) ?? hmm.

Well, if you wait until December, certainly they'll have announced or rumoured something even better than the X2 and you'll be waiting all over again for THAT one. If you got the X1 late ,what makes you think you'll get the next high-end SE phone on time? Better enjoy the X1 now

I don't have the X1 - I'm considering it heavily since my provider offers it on subsidy but I'm not locking into another 3yr contract (I just started 3yr contract 4mths ago). More competition will have HSPA here in Canada late fall and better pricing in January next year so I've got to factor in contract cancellation fees before I port my number. Retail X1 is $600.

I chose this avatar to better reflect my use of a smartphone (former E71, current N85).

I've been reading first hand reviews of slowness with operator (Rogers Wireless) branding. I'm aware WM6.5 ROM is available on some forum to load but I'm not experience enough to waist a $600 phone - or should I say I'm not rich enough to do that to waist a new $600 phone.

I wouldn't depend on running your X1 day-to-day with WM6.5. It's nice for previewing what is coming for Windows Mobile, but for me, it just wasn't reliable enough for day to day use. UI Response and messaging really suffered. I had to soft-reset my phone twice or more a day for it to behave correctly. With WM6.1 with r2a & r3a, I rarely have to soft-reset.

You wouldn't be wasting $600 as whatever you do is fully reversible, AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES.

I have successfully switched between ROMs on my x1 LOADS of times (probably around 25+) and always been reversible !

As one post above, check out xda-developers.com... they're the geniuses

@nv1286, thanks for the vote of confidence and reminder of XDA developers. I recall that Microsoft wanted to shut them down; or was it HTC and they backpedaled.

Your post doesn't ensure too much confidence to a newb an WMPro like me ... "AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES" means be very wary as a newb. IF I where to jump in the changing firmwares on a BB like I did back when I had the 8100 2yrs ago I'd brick it and still find a away to resolve it. Mind you it took me 3hrs to find a solution and waisted half a good futbol semi final game and lots of drinks but I did get that slow blinking RED light resolved. Plus its backed by warranty. WM doesn't support this when upgrading & downloading - only upgrading by specific release by manufacturer that licensed it.

I think that everyone who has X1 know, that earlier this year there was a leak of R3 firmware for xperia. It had new panel manager, "growing" panel, new Media Panel and some more new things. After short time Sony Ericsson have made R3 firmware available through SEUS, but there was only few bugs fixed and no sign of all the novelties from the leaked R3. How come the release name is the same? I think the answer is on the youtube video below... The quality is really poor, but I think it's "X2" Vulcan (i know it says so on the startup screen, but I'm speaking about the overal design of the handset). Wondering what is the firmware number? It's R3. I think that the ROM that has leaked earlier this year was just an early build for the Vulcan + WinMob 6.5. It's just an idea, but it might be the reason why the released R3 doesn't have all the novelties. The only problem is that the info tab still shows the old platform (MSM7200) I really hope they will use the hardware from the rumoured Rachael...

Just saw some online news reports that SE will officially release "Rachel" as the X3 when it debuts!

If Rachel is X3, what ever happened to the X2 model??

Darn SE for confusing people with their "leaked" publicity stunts... um....news reports!

Rachael is a Android device.
With new hardware. No keyboard.

X1 successor is "Vulcan", on WinMo.

Two different phones

Interestingly, "Rachel" has already appeared briefly for pre-order on Expansys - http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2009/07/22/android_expansys/ - Expansys have removed it now, but it does suggest that the Android handset may be making it to market sooner.

The Register are calling it the "X2" and inferring that Windows Mobile's been dropped for the Xperia line. Of course that may well be nonsense as we've all seen pictures of "Vulcan" in the wild, but then again, just because prototypes exist doesn't mean that an (as yet unnannounced) phone will actually be released. Just ask Paris.
