It appears Nigerians might just be a step away from experiencing true broadband speeds and the whole package that comes with it.
Globacom just annonced on its website yesterday (http://www.gloworld.com/dynamic/shownews.aspx?news_id=102&Cn=GloMobile) that it will begin offering 3ple play services through its other subsidiary;Glo fixed which will commence operations soon.
I hope we won't have to bleed Naira before we enjoy the services...

Can someone test this?
Calling 3XX080xxxx using a Celtel line is FREE. Someone used it to call me about 4 different times this afternoon and I confirmed it in the office with someone's Celtel. It even allows you to call OTHER networks!
But after I ran home, dusted off my Celtel line, tried it and nothing happened. I hear something about "IBM AIX direct dial". So I need independent confirmation before I conclude that Celtel has pulled the plug.
So, to call me, u dial 3XX0805505XXXX
It worked this afternoon!
And please keep the info to urself for now. I will edit this post 2moro and wipe out the number.

@Coola, Angel and Mamba: I don’t think I did anything special to get my MMS to work. Just check the mms configuration on your phone to ascertain that all the parameters are correct. And remember to send an mms to yourself first.
@Aya: I use a download manager called DAP8.5 which considerably speeds up my downloads using Celtel gprs and makes it more stable, but its bound to leave a large hole where your credit balance used to be.
@234hay: Glodirect is the web enabled data profile for glogprs, while Glogwap is the wap version. Glodirect is only available to postpaid subscribers, and requires you to enter into some form of contract with them. Visit a Gloworld office for details.

lol..WAP?..mein they'r ripping u guys off in nig ,gprs(even edge) should really be the standard the networks offer now...actually does anybody kno how developed our mobile industry is compared to other african countries?
if a new network is coming into the mkt i think the best strategy is to use the one three uk used when they first broke into the uk mkt....cheap everything!!!!!...even with thier crap network service(in the early days)..people joined them in droves.
also does anyone kno if the networks starting a line rental form of contract soon?

Actually, this "WAP" version runs on GPRS too. It simply means that usage on pay as you go is limited to WAP and exclusive of HTTP, FTP, POP/IMAP etc

@ ambyzown: how does a BlackBerry differ from phones such as the SE-M600 or the P-series,don't they all have push email. You can even 'make' your P and M series phones BlackBerry-like via downloads from the SE site.So what really is the difference?
@ all: the next computer(desktop or notebook) you by;if its a Dell, may probabaly have GNU/Linux (Ubuntu) preinstalled. That hopefully should reduce the cost of acquiring branded computers

I hope Linux OS is easy to use and all the pirated software in the market will run on it.
@all I am surprised no one has commented on the free Celtel call loophole in my last post. Well, maybe next time I will just enjoy such tips alone

@ coolapostle: you will not need to run pirated software as virtually all software that run on the GNU/Linux platform is opensource and or free.Besides, most of the software you might have had to buy with either Windows or Mac OSX comes preinstalled e.g. OpenOffice 2.2 instead of Windows Office,GIMP instead of Photoshop, etc.
There's no denying the fact that you might need to learn the ropes with some of the applications but you did have to learn to with either Windows or Mac OS X too.
At the moment, the most popular and user-friedly distribution and absolutely FREE version of the numerous of GNU/Linux is Ubuntu.I presume you know you can make free requests for the CDs @
https://shipit.ubuntu.com/. There is also the Kubuntu variant,(https://shipit.kubuntu.org/)its also from the same company-Canonical.
The difference is that while Ubuntu's GUI is GNOME,Kubuntu is KDE so you might want to request for both CDs.However you will have to sign up first by providing your email address only. You will eventually be able to use the same use the same login details for both accounts.
In the alternative, you could download the ISO images and burn to a disc if you have a fast internet connection(I doubt it even if you use EVDO).The delivery of the CDs does take a (long) while;4-6wks depending on country of shipping.
Whatever mode you choose, you will be getting Ubuntu/Kubuntu 7.04(fiesty Fawn). There are still the Edubuntu(targeted at schools) and Xubuntu variants(for PCs with old hardware or for those of you who want higher performance)...Xubuntu is the only variant you cannot request for free but you can still download.
Are you still reading this post? you should be typing
