Bomb blasts rock Davao, General Santos, Makati
Abu Sayyaf claims responsibility
(2ND UPDATE) VALENTINE'S Day turned bloody after almost simultaneous explosions rocked the cities of Makati, Davao, and General Santos, leaving at least 11 people dead and scores injured, according to reports culled by INQ7.net.
The Abu Sayyaf has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which they said was done to protest the government's “atrocities” against Muslims, including the ongoing offensives against a breakaway faction of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in Mindanao.
“Our latest operation in GenSan, Davao, and Manila, planned and executed with precision by the gallant warriors of Islam is our continuing response to the government's atrocities committed against Muslims everywhere,” Abu Solaiman, the group's spokesman, said.
“This is our Valentine's gift to the President,” he said in an interview over GMA Network's dzBB radio.
GMA Network quoted Metro Manila police chief Director Avelino Razon Jr. as saying that the Abu Sayyaf may just be taking advantage of the explosions and that their participation still had to be confirmed.
In Makati City, at least three people were killed while at least 20 others were injured after an explosion rocked a bus plying EDSA as it passed underneath the Metro Rail Transit's Ayala Station, Razon said.
“Our EOD [explosives and ordnance division] and SOCO [scene of the crime operation] are clearing the area,” Razon said.
The bus explosion occurred only a few meters from the Hotel Inter-Continental in Makati.
“Checkpoints have been set up to ensure security in Metro Manila is in place,” Razon said.
In General Santos, three people were killed while over a dozen others were injured after a bomb went off inside a tricycle parked outside the Gaisano Mall at around 7 p.m., Senior Superintendent Willy Nangane, city police chief said.
One of the fatalities died on the spot while two others were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, he said.
Five people were killed when a second blast hit a bus depot in Davao city at dusk, Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman said on GMA-7 dzBB.
Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Buenaventura Pascual said improvised bombs exploded in Davao and General Santos.
The Abu Sayyaf is an alleged cell of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist network.
Fighting between the government and loyalists of former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) has been raging since last week, leaving over 70 people dead.
