@all I am surprised no one has commented on the free Celtel call loophole in my last post. Well, maybe next time I will just enjoy such tips alone

Would love to change to Ubuntu but it's too much of a hassle. And to think the guy behind the Unbuntu project is a South African.

@ brix: I really wouldn't agree with you that 'its too much of a hassle'.The installation process is quite easy if not too easy.Unlike other GNU/Linux distros,Ubuntu and its variants comes with its own partitioner;GRUB I believe its called.
Why I might agree with the 'hassle' issue is where you have a small hard-disk and would probably have to share it with your Windows or Mac OS X.
As for it being owned by a South African, the two SA companies in Nigeria;MTN and Multichoice have not been too 'friendly'.But since we don't have our own billionaire space tourist who supports Open Source Software we might just have to PRAY a Nigeran has such a brillant idea rather than jostling for space on the pages of Ovation.Since its not my money or my bizness, they can continue to say CHEESE...

I tried downloading Ubuntu once and it was taking forever. But I have requested for a free CD. I'm not in any real hurry, but I certainly want to explore alternatives to Windoze.

A friend got a new Vista-loaded laptop recently. Half of the applications he needs are reported by Vista as having compatibility issues. After a couple of reboots when running those apps, he had to uninstall them. The lappy runs Pentium M 1.6MHz Duo Processor and 1GB RAM, yet my Celeron M 750MB RAM is not as sluggish in performing tasks. Told him I'm not interested in running Vista for a long time.

Back to linux, one of my reservations with Ubuntu is about compatibility with accesories e.g. My PCMCIA card for internet access, and my smartphones. If one has to trawl the internet to obtain drivers for those, then the hassle may not be worth it (if at all one finds).

Anyone knows if Mac laptops are being sold and supported in Nigeria?

@AYA: Superior Equipments @ Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe, VI sells and services Mac laptops. PC Outlet @ The Palms also sells Apple products.
Are you thinking of getting one? They are quite expensive and lack drivers and support for most mobile devices. Unless ofcourse you are going for the new Intel-based lappys that support dual OS X and Windows XP operation.

LOL, my life is already quite simplified...I use OpenOffice and Mozilla Firefox. I could probably load Ubuntu onto my hard drive but right now I'm still happy with the bits and pieces I get from Windoze ( to quote AYA) and will stick it out with XP until something better comes along. Unfortunately I've not been convinced by Vista.

Just a quick question: I see lots of people on here have the latest handsets, do you guys buy them through the networks like Glo and MTN or do you get them from independent shops? Down here most of the expensive handsets are acquired when you sign a two-year (ball & chain) contract.

@brym: It looks like I am generally stuck with Windows then.

@brix25: You will be hard pressed to find any network offering subsidised handsets on contracts here. GSM contracts in Nigeria are still very exploitative - more than you can imagine. Most of us buy our handsets - expensive or otherwise - off the open market.
