It reminds me of the time, quite a few years ago, when Uncle Bill visited my school. The principal, not being au fait with Pumpkin Patch, repeatedly called him Waffles (not even Woofles, mind you!!) until Uncle Bill got fed up and told him, sotto voce, "Ek is Bill, nie die donderse hond nie!"

Oh hell Kryptik, that's hilarious.
The only TV personality that ever visited my school when I was a very young lighty was (you'll have to think wayyyy back for this one, ie. late 70's or early 80's) Eddie Eksteen, when Biltong and Potroast was in full swing on TV back then. Moerse...
I found Pieter Dirk Uys's appearance and talk at my secondary school in the late 80's, ripping off PW Botha and the other NP cronies during that era (error

) so damn accurately, far more appealing and memorable. What an intriguing concoction of satire and wit about not only the people 'running' the country back then, but also memoirs from his travels, trials and tribulations.
I remember thinking how 'popular' he would've been if he pulled off the same talk/ assembly in more staunch outposts during that time, like Ventersdorp for instance...

Okay,i stopped laughing now,eventually!
Pieter Dirk-uys is quite legendary. Wonder if he is still doing his shows all over the world.
Blindside, the swedish hard rock/metal band is doing a show tomorrow night. Want to try make it. I quite like them. Would be great to see them live.

Yeah I know Blindside. Glad to hear they're in SA. They and POD go some way back.
The last gig that I saw of that ilk in SA was at The Doors in Edenvale, back in 2001, when one of my all-time fave grindcore bands, Mortification, were playing. We were fortunate enough to meet up with Steve Rowe and co after the gig. What a humble, interesting person to speak to.
They were very, very well supported by SA's DieVersion.

Oh man, do i remember Eddie! He was hilarious, always had me in stitches!!
I've just finished the 2nd of two thickish books which i've been reading, both by Wilbur Smith. I tend to revisit my favourite authors from time to time, so during the holiday i read 6 of his books, sort of clearing out the cobwebs. Anyway, i only found 2 of the 4 books in this particular series. I've just finished "Birds Of Prey" and "Monsoon", and now i'm left with that incomplete feeling... I hate it when that happens, means i'm not going to settle down until i lay my hands on the remaining two and devour them from cover to cover. It does one the world of good to escape into literature every now and then, far from the madding crowd :)
EDIT: I just realized why your mention of Ventersdorp was ringing a bell, Wanqa. If Pieter-Dirk Uys ever should appear in Ventersdorp, and being the brilliant satirist that he is, he of course wouldn't refrain from mentioning the "onderbroekie" incident... Now, ET claims to have seen the light whilst locked up in Rooigrond prison, and as such he probably would take Uys's barbs in stride, but any reference to his underwear would probably provoke the dude into one of those white-hot rages all over again :-)

@ Kryptik,
I saw a bike on eBay tonight that made me think back to my studying days in PE. It was my first 1100 motorcycle, and as I stayed in Summerstrand yet worked at Greenacres on the weekends, I relished the trip back to the res. Why? I often took the route all the way down Mount Road, right to the bottom where it meets Main Road (where Sharwoods Motorcycles were, I know they've changed their name since then) and there was a definitive 'ramp' at the intersection from that side... This would always have me flying through the air with the bike as I hit it at high speed (if the traffic lights were still green, of course...), just before crossing the road to to the flyover ramp for Humewood/ Summerstrand.
Sigh...the little things in life and those more care-free days...
Wanqa's EDIT: LMAO, you're so right, and I'm sure he also wouldn't be able to resist a pop at ET's unplanned dismount off his horse while the AWB were having their little march/ parade, with all the TV cameras and public watching...

that ramp is still there, Wanqa, and it's still as lekker as always to zip over it when the circumstances are just right! My daughter's always urging me to go faster when we're approaching that ramp, also when we're heading down into the 3rd avenue dip in Newton Park. She says she likes the weightlessness. I reckon she's aiming to be S.A's first female cosmonaut
Have you guys seen how two Cape Town guys are using Mxit to run their
business? Quite innovative!!

Mortification in South Africa? My word, I did not even know they knew where South Africa was! lol! That is the one thing around here, we do not have a shortage of metal bands, but they all seem to, well, suck. Everyone plays in a metal band, but show me one good band? They just don't exist. I do not have very high standards, and not even my low standards can be met in this regard.
I think it was POD that signed up Blindside or something like that, but I know about them sort of being linked in a way like that.
That is cool about mxit being used for business. I have suspected this for a while, and am sure some big companies are using it. Telkon rips off regardless, so yeah...

Happy Teacher's Day, Wanqa. I heard that the UK teachers are all wearing ties today, as a form of solidarity with teachers in countries where conditions are less conducive to the art of moulding young minds... Over here we'll be treated to coffee and biscuits laid on by the school, during second interval. Whoop de doo, how exciting, can't wait lol!

@ Francois, Mortification played at a few venues around SA on their world tour, even in Bloem!

I have to agree with you wrt the vast majority of SA metal bands. DieVersion, I thought, were the exception; they were brilliant.
