True, we buy from independent vendors.
Ball and chain contract?
Realy how does this contract stuff work over there?
Is part of the cost of the phone built into the contract?

@ brix25:you might not have to wait long as Microsoft will be pulling support for XP as early as next year in a bid to 'force' people to upgrade to Vista.Of course Dell will still be supplying XP notebooks for some time;not sure for how long.Mac OS X is not an option.Ubuntu on the other hand is gathering support from companies such as Dell.HP might just be looking their way too.
There is no doubt that there isn't an array of applications yet available for Ubuntu or GNU/Linux for thaty matter,I am aware that some of the applications for XP can made to run via emulation
Regarding the phones ,believe it or not people buy them.I know some1 who got the N95 for N120,000(waht is that in Rands?)

The contract thing is quite simple, you go into any authorised service provider and choose from one of a myriad of packages, you then choose what phone you want and then you sign a two-year contract. I'd say the contract is "ball and chain" because it's very prejudicial if for some other reason you want to cancel it within the two-year period.
But for all this you get the funkiest handset (depending on ur package) and free minutes.
Right now the N95 is available on MTN and Vodacom, you have to pay something like an initial $150 towards the phone and then your subscription fee will be in the region of $50 a month over a two-year period. The cool thing though is that in the 20th month of your contract you get a free handset upgrade, again depending on your choice of phone.

The N95 sells for N102,000 @ Dax Tech. My MD's PA even got a better offer of N90,000 and she's desperately looking for someone to pick her Treo 750 Windows Mobile phone. Her price? N70,000. Anyone interested?

@abu: Welcome back O!
I'm not sure those guys using MTN's Xtracool package will agree with you. IMO they are a more friendlier outfit these days.
As for congestion, I read somewhere that it will be addressed sooner cos they are into another phase of expansion:building more exchanges, switches and cell sites.

@All: I was at a Celtel shop this morning where I was given a 'Celtel Access' hand bill. It explains the benefits of connecting to the net using Celtel's internet gateway, obtaining connection settings, and billing type. No new information here except that it confirms that Celtel's GPRS is now fully operational. Billing is 10k per kilobyte for both postpaid and prepaid subscribers. The attendant at the counter confirmed the billing.
So it's now official.
Goodbye Glodirect!

Ah! Celtel also has a 'mobile office' package that essentially supports push-email services and over the air synchronization of contacts, calendar and mails. This is excellent for enterprise users who desire to get info on the go from corporate servers using their supported smartphones. For this package you pay a flat monthly fee of N2,000.
Funny, glomobile is offering their Blackberry subscribers a similar service for N10,000 monthly.

Excellent. I ditched my Glo SIM just yesterday night and sent an SMS round to my contacts notifying them of my new 0808 number. Easy as that.

I'm keeping the SIM in a box somewhere for future rethinks though.

@brym & AYA, glad to see u guys are now enjoying something from Celtel. other networks positioned gprs as a thing for only the rich while Celtel did the right thing by offering cheaper gprs without a contract. What i need now is a solid phone to enjoy this Celtel offer with. i obviously cant wait for Amby's P1 so i need a good cheap symbian or WM5 devise with touch screen. Any ideas guys? it's got to be 40k or less.
