All they need to do is keep the pixels size around 2.0 microns, and they have a winner. The N8 is at 1.75 microns @ 12Mpix ..so that gives you an idea. The size of the sensor is perfect for a mobile phone.. the will probably be a small hump, but if they can blend it in nicely with the body, it won't matter.
RX100 and Nikon V1's ISO test proves the otherwise
ISO 100
RX100
Nikon J1
ISO 1600
Sony RX100
Nikon J1
I could show you more IQ comparisons but I think it won't matter.
If you ask me what Sony needs to do is to instead fix their JPEG engine and introduce RAW shooting as this issue remains Sony's weak spot even in their DSLT/NEX lineup.
The lens is very important as well.. I hope they can put together a good camera pack, and if they do.. that will be the first proper camera phone running Android. It took Sony(Ericsson) about 4 ears (post Satio), but they might finally deliver more than just marketing talk.
True, they can opt for a Zeiss Alpha glass or a Minolta G but I think the latter is used only for telephoto which it excels at.
If Honami's sensor would use the company's patented in-sensor Phase Detection AF, they should be the first and only camera phone with fast AF performance that no one in the smartphone world could ever match.

True. Recent Sony CAMERA (not smartphone) sensors have disproved the belief that higher the pixel size the better.

@Ramu, any confirmation about the triluminous display or sharp igzo display?
I really hope Sony doesn't disappioint in this part since almost everything else is the best.

Xperia SP camera gives you generally oversaturated colors, with average dynamic range and good contrast. The oversaturation is particularly pronounced on the red channel, resulting in occasional clipping and red objects coming out pink. More importantly, though, the Xperia SP sensor resolves an unsatisfactory amount of detail and produces pretty noise images.
i hope the new image processing in honami solved all the xperia camera b4.....
