Its a light sensor for the keypad LEDs. When it detects light it turns them off, when it doesnt, it leaves them on. Battery saving!

It is a light sensor but it works in the reverse of how Coxy described (Well. The 2 W850's I have do)

In low light the screen and keypad lights dim a little and in normal light, the screen and keypad lights are brighter (probably to reduce glare)
All due to that little clear piece on the top left of the phone

I would have thought it would have been better to be ABLE to SEE the keypad in the dark, not turn the lights off so you CANT!

I know. Thats exactly what I thought. The keypad doesn't go out completly though. It just dim's a little and everything is still visible.

Just put your finger over the sensor and you will see the brightness dim. Remove your finger and it lights up again.

I read some very negative things about the W850's navigation keys on gsmarena.com. How is it in real?

I think the business with the sensor is right as it is, as if the screen got brighter in the dark, it would almost blind you, whereas if its dim, you can still see the screen, and it doesnt make your eyes hurt. Maybe?

I just wanted to add, and wonder if any other W850 users share my opinion, that I much prefer the "normal" joystick to the four small navigation buttons the W850 has. They are really small and take quite a while to get used to...

the navigation buttons should have been left out and it should just be blank around the play/stop button , but touch sensitive of course
