Q4 results came on Jan 16th, 2008 (if I can trust my own blog post at USEB).

Nothing announced there. V640/K630 were around Oct 07.

outside of production limitations, wouldnt it be a nice DREAM to get that 3.5", 0.008-inch thick OLED display into a phone, i dont even need touch, but think about the power consumption and visibility, MY HEAVENS thats a dream screen (for now ...) man wow, not quite HD but it can scale it appropriately, GO SONY. this is what i was saying before though, the technology is there, there are very little dev costs when the parent company decides the push forward with a new technology.

900MHz+ 512MB Rom 32GB SSD (1.8") Dual MicroSDHC/M2 Slot -> new 3.5" OLED + GPRS/GSM/HSDPA/HSUPA/WiFi/GPS/BT

a cam worthy to have its pictures displayed on a screen that nice. 5MP(7.2MP if your numbers oriented, but i more so want a clearer crisper picture in line with a stand alone point and shoot, not necessarily D-SLR)

0.2mm THICK!!!

cmon ppl, that would do WONDERS for power consumption and screen resolution. is this a sign of things to come, when do you think that we could see OLEDs (not 4color) full fledged screens in cell phones?

i think samsung may already have some out ...

OLED would be a a great addition to phones. A sharper, brighter and highly energy efficient screen would makes phones a super dream to use. The technology is there, however, the cost for implementing it is not viable.

For example, an 11" OLED screen sold at a sony store retails for $2600 USD. Let's say you get a 3" screen and for simple math purposes, we'll pretend the other screen is 12". So we divide the price by 4 and we get a little over $800 for JUST the screen.

With other components, software, development costs, etc. The phone having a 3" OLED screen would cost upwards of $1200 I think, which although would be very nice and admittedly there are those who would spend the money to get it, would be inefficient for their current business strategy. I doubt full resolution OLEDs will make it into phones before they become more mainstream in the monitor/tv market. Just my 2 cents.

The TV is $2600, not the screen, you have to assume the costs of all the other components in there plus the marketing and R&D costs when you see that price. So let say there is a 50% markup over the actual production cost, to account for those other factors, the Sony name and the "privilege" of owning the first OLED TV. That puts the cost of the screen in the neighborhood of $400-500. So a screen 1/4 the size, assuming production costs were the same and that it did not cost more to produce the smaller size screen, would cost ~$100. Still, much more than what current screens cost, but also factor in that Sony does not intend to sell many of these TV's so they can not right now reap any benefits from an economy of scale. Once these screens are being mass produced you can expect prices to be roughly double what screens cost today at first. So a phone utilizing a screen of this type need not be prohibitively expensive compared to the cost of high-end phones today.

Well, acutally 3" is not 1/4 of 12" but 4x4=16 so it is 1/16 of 12".
So if the screen costs are around $400 indeed, the screen will only cost $25. That is acceptable

^ I get your logic now.

EDIT: as far as costs, true. My estimates are bit high and it is true the cost is for a TV and its components and the R&D for the TV and the sony name. But here we are paying for the sony name as well. There is plenty of R&D for the phone, perhaps moreso due to the size restraints and variety of components needing to work together. There is a reason why they don't implement it and most of the time the reason is usually money.
