While these new cameras might suggest that Sony still has faith in the point-and-shoot category, that’s not really the case. In fact Sony has admitted that point-and-shoot cameras are a dying breed and are slowly being replaced by smartphone cameras. With cameras on phones slowly getting better and better, we might be just a year or two away from witnessing the death of the point-and-shoot category. This may not matter much to companies like Sony who also make smartphones but will to companies like Canon or Nikon, whose main business is making cameras.

We may only hope that Sony will improve camera quality on their phones in near future.

The point & shoot camera scenario is perhaps applicable to the handheld games market too, where they are being replaced by smartphones. Although the 3DS seems to be selling well, Sony's PS Vita has gone below 19,000 for the last week we've seen statistics.

So it seems Sony is following Samsung's naming strategy with one-letter names (Galaxy S, R, M, W, Y). So next round it will be the Xperia S2 etc ? I kind of prefer the previous short names, easier to remember (Arc, Neo, Ray).

Well its Samsung that copied Sony and not the other way around . Sony uses alphabets for their models since a long time. Like Vaio S, Z, F, E, C series. Cybershot W, T, series. Walkman A series, Z series, X series etc. Now since Sony is the sole owner, phones also use the same naming strategy. Even Bravia used the same naming convention - W, X, Z series bravia.

Seems the ST-Ericsson NOVATHOR U8500 chipset is used in the new midrange Samsung Galaxy S Advanced, so perhaps ST-Ericsson is gaining some traction now ?

This handset should be a direct competitor to Nypon (Xperia P).

This beauty has 18.2 mp EXMOR R sensor, shoots 1080p video @60fps, 3.3 inch 921k res OLED touch screen, waterproof upto 16 feet and also dust and low temperature resistant.

How long till we see a true Cyber-shot Android like this from Sony?

That's a nice minimalistic design. But why 16 megapixels? If you check the specs of pro sports/reportage cameras you'll see they max at 16-18 megapixels and their sensors are times larger than those in P&S cameras like this.

Some people simply don't understand that more megapixels on a tiny sensor doesn't give you any better picture quality, in fact, it gives you only more noise!
