Are you refering to the announcement about number portability?

@all: Yes_futur sent me two PMs; one in french, the other in English just saying "Hello". Anyone know how to crack the code?

Does this mean that if i switch my Glo line to Mtn, i get to enjoy mtn freebies like free night calls and i now load my phone with mtn recharge card instead of Glo's?

and also,

Are there going to be hidden charges or technicalities involved in switching to another network?

No; number portability simply means that you can switch from Glo to MTN without having to change your number. You will no longer be able to use your former network's services but your number will not change.

@I do not see how your assertion that it will be available only on contract lines plays out, or how the customer is supposed to continue to pay a service charge on the old network. One, it sounds whacky. Two, you are (thankfully) not the regulator

The networks that should be worried are: MTEL and Celtel. Their subs will decamp in large numbers. Except, of course, Amby.

From my understanding, number portability means I get to change from one network to another and still keep my number. I should think those with contracts will have a harder time switching since they have to fulfill -or cancel- their contracts.

But NCC is probably shooting itself in the foot. NCC says the networks should stop all promos until the increase their capacity and now they want number portability. Can Glo and MTN (the main beneficiaries) cope with the influx???

@aya: it is my understanding that the 0802 number prefix is exclusively for the celtel mobile network and so if i originate a call from any network to an 0802 number my host exchange automatically routes the call to a celtel switch. now assume that this 0802 number has been ported to glo, are you telling me that celtel will allow its switch to reroute this call to a glo switching station for free? no way! number portability is a premium service, and you will be made to pay for it.

I am sorry, but your sentiments do not reflect the facts. The fact is that only the regulator can decree that portability be charged for. There are places where no no fees are charged at all for porting your number from one network to another. Of course, there are also places where a fee is charged.

Number portability is not about re-routing calls from one network to another (that's call forwarding). Number porting is about "snapping" a number from one network and donating it to another. If the subscriber ceases to use the number, it reverts to the donor network.

No; number portability is not a premium service. A country may choose to make it so or not. It is a question of choice. Where portability is implemented, there is usually also a law preventing a network from refusing to port a subscriber's number to another network.

Do a Google search for news item and articles on number portability if you please.

I dont think there is anything hard and fast about these numbers. I dont even think it involves much technology to enable number portability. What makes 080212345678 a celtel number? Because celtel provisioned it on its network and flagged it as its own.
Have you ever heard MTN telling you a number that you called is wrong and you should check it, when you are CERTAIN that the number is correct?! Have you ever heard GLO telling you that a certain number does not exist on glo network?
May be instead of glo's robot reading the first 4 figures to know this is glo's number, it will need to read all the numbers. That is about what it entails.
As per whether, the networks will charge for it, your guess is as good as mine. But I'm sure people wont mind.
