Aya Spot on!

In what ever case ,number porting will only be allowed when you have ran the span of your contract .in other words out of contract.

aya you need to read up on the technicalities involved in routing calls to ported numbers. the donor network is still involved in ensuring calls to ported numbers are completed. this occurs when a call to a ported number is initiated. the donor networks local switch still has to identify the number as ported and supply info to the query and reroutes the call to the receiving network's switch
I think I'm old enough to know the difference b/w call forwarding & number porting. The former is a one-way service.

amby, technicalities notwithstanding, it changes not the fact that the issue of charges for porting is dependent on the regulator. In places where porting has been implemented, we see where there are no charges and we see where fees are charged.

We can only wait to see what direction the NCC will take in our own case.

I gotta agree with the majority today. The number were just allocated that way to enhance clarity and avoid mistaken duplicated numbers. But if is totally possible to even bring in the Unity PTOs and u might see 0803 on a multilinks number!!

Snapped this with my P990i at day break in Maiduguri and just had to share!!

This is the time Guys like Brix need to make an entrance. I think number portability is near two years old in ZA.

By the way, what "problem" is the NCC trying to solve with this number portability issue? Are Nigerian subs complaining about CHOICE? I have FOUR GSM SIM cards for heaven sakes!

I think Engr Ndukwe just wanted to make a landmark statement to celebrate the 4th Year of the NCC Consumer Paliarment. Something earth-shaking like Soludo's brilliant naira redom idea.

What we need is the power sector to be fixed so that the Telcos would stop giving us excuses for keeping tariffs high.
What we need is broadband net access EVERYWHERE in the major cities.
What we need is NIGCOMSAT privatised and given a Telecoms license ASAP so that we can see how they perform.

Tried it a few times, but never got it to work. Sorry. I eventually got tired of trying and threw away the idea.

@coola: You might want to read this bit from MTN's South African website about number porting. AFAIK there aren't any fees involved. For obvious reasons you won't be able to change your network when you're in the middle of contract with your current provider.
