you don't need to use the gmail, just have an account. and it all will work just fine. i never uses it mail feature but i do sync my contacts and callandar just for safty. and to be able to use the market you must have a gmail to verify if you buy something.

I have turned all synching off to google. Prefer to keep my backups at home. Another issue I have cone across is if you swap sim card (going abroad) and don't have internet set up in that country, the calendar fail to find a connection and nothing is shown in the calendar. Remembero keep paper copies of your travel info Don't know if this is the case woth 2.1 but was definitely a letdown on 1.6.

But you confirm: when I go abroad I will also have to connect to internet to use Calendar?
