Well my first one i bought off jenbones, but got rid of that and decided to buy another new from the apple store at full price.
Just got home, and on the way i dropped the 30GB on the pavement, without it's little case

I now have a deep scrape in the chrome, but not too bad i guess...

do you want to convert a retail dvd ie one of your own or do you just need to convert a downloaded avi file or equivalent into mp4?
There are loads of programs out there, i have been using ipod video convertor on my pc made by
http://www.jodix.com
It is simple to use, if you still have trouble i can email you a csi episode from the current series running in the usa, i don't have anything else sorry.
EDIT:
If you have quicktime pro (if not pm me and i will get hold of it for you) then just follow these instructions from the apple website on how to convert. Then once complete just drag and drop into itunes and update. Voila!

Neither i downloaded a dud, but from what i have heard there are better programs than quicktime pro and it costs £15 to buy which is cheap enough.
I am still hunting if i find it will let you know.

Somehow I feel that the iPod 5G lost the message somewhere along the way. The iPod was supposed to be one of those 'no hassle' devices, just plug in and its done. I have heard numerous complaints about people not being able to transfer their own videos to the iPod 5G. They usually end up buying content from the iTunes store, which to say the least, is lacking in much non-american content. I personally use videora, but the standard iPod user doesn't know the difference between 'bit rate' and 'sampling frequency'. I think its about time iTunes did automatic video conversion for the iPod.
