this is how i can use only gsm
menu>settings>mobile networks>gsm/3G networks (and here i can chose wich i prefer)
i guess you did know that already but maybe it will help anyway
Apparently I'm an idiot, as I it looks like I never looked in that menu since upgrading from my initial firmware, as it did indeed list 2 available networks, one GSM and one 3G. It's now forced to 2G and I'm looking forward to more battery life

Thanks for that. I can't work out how to force it to stop trying to reconnect to the 3G one afterwards though. I'll keep playing.

Could the 3G/GSM thing be a good reason as to why my battery hasn't been lasting that long ?

if it tries to connect, you must have only chosen the 2g network of your provider i think, you should have an option that looks like.
- GSN and 3G
- GSM only [
i have never had any problem, with it trying to acces the 3G network when i have chosed GSM only, GPRS is still active thou

3G does use up considerably more power so if you set it to GSM only and just turn on 3G when you need it, you notice a sizable improvement in battery life.

It does show 2 options, one with the 3G symbol and one without. I set network selection to manual as opposed to automatic and then selected the non-3G network. It stays in GSM for about 10 seconds then switches back over to the 3G one. Maybe the local network does some 3G capability check and forces it to switch over?

I went my Vodafone Live w900i to 2 SE authorised centers to update the phone from R5AG to R5BB and they told me that there is nothing yet for Voda. I know that the latest phones that is sold here in Greece has the R5BB from now on but the problem is that there is no update for the old ones till now. We have to wait SE to make the update for Live w900i. Maybe they are planning a new update for all w900 so they will make it for every version that exists in w900.
BTW for W900i in Greek Language does anyone knows the appropriate EU Firmaware (EU1,2,3,4,5 ????)
