I also still stand by my previous post that the HPM70's are so sensitive that they contribute/exaggerate the problem.
I totally agree with you. I've bought those headphones hoping to have a better sound but I am not satisfied: imho little bass and lots of mids; lots of treble too but hiss especially at low volume. I like sennheiser mx-300 that came with my old iriver mp3 player (which is nearly 4 years old but sounds waaay better than w800).

I got bored at work today and did some more testing of the sound quality differences between the R1L and R1BC acoustic drives on my W800 running R1BC F/W. In my mind I have confirmed what I said last night. i.e. when using the untouched R1L drivers there is a substantial decrease in hissing. To prove it to yourself all you have to do is compare the background hiss that is present when you enter the MP3 player (not playing music). And, with the untouched R1L drivers there is definately a substantial loss of quality when playing at full volume. The bass rattles and treble distorts. The R1BC drivers are definately superior at high volume.
What I find interesting is that I'm almost certain that the sound on a phone with full R1L firmware did not play as loud. I believe the RIL drivers added to a phone with R1BC firmware plays just as loud as R1BC drivers - just with added distortion. So, I'm thinking there is something somewhere else in the main OS of the phone that interacts with these drivers and controls max volume. Does this make sense? Has anyone else done there own testing with the original R1L drivers yet?

Yep mate...the volumeis not controoled by the drivers as stated belo but in the settings.xml file located at tpa/preset/settings/multimedia/mp

Noted. But all settings.xml does is record the volume I last had the player at, my eq settings and the file I last played. And, a couple of other items not worth mentioning. I think the actual amp gain is somewhere deeper in firmware.

Hi guys, I have a w810i and also have the hiss issue... I figured that the hissing is only noticable when the volume is at it's lowest, but at the higher levels I will most certainly damage my ears

. So I bought the Sennheiser Mx500 headphones that have 2 times the impedance and a volumecontrol. This means I have to set the volume on the phone a lot louder and I do not notice the hiss anymore.
It's not really a solution, but it might help a few people out I guess!

AKSD - I stand corrected - I thought settings.xml recorded the last volume you had the media player set at. I was wrong because when I copied settings.xml with my volume set at 1 it was still recorded as 10 in settings.xml. So, I wonder what the volume string was set at in the original R1L settings.xml? When I get some more time I'll see which volume setting works best with the r1l drivers. Has anyone already found the optimum setting?

I think 8 should work fine with the R1L series

I have tried the R1L you've sent me and I agree with you as regards the results.
Using hpm-70 headphones I don't need to have high volume so R1L can be ok, while using sennheisers, which require higher volume (and hiss less), R1B are better.

hi, I got a (vodafone) branded w810i and I would like to fix this hiss problem too. Is there any way for me to do this? without unbranding it or something, so I can still give it back to the store when I get probs.
