Well, the next phone in my experiment arrived today, a D500! It came boxed with instructions and charger, so no need to have to buy any more accessories for it. As the listing described, the screen is rather fuzzy:
Am just about to take the phone apart, I'm hoping that the ribbon cable (which should be the problem) just needs a good clean, and it's connectors needing a good clean and will work fine. Fingers crossed!

I've come to what could be my first snag. Taken the phone apart, had a fiddle with the data ribbon and put the phone back together. Turned the phone on, screen was working! Great! Started going through the menus, and all was fine except the backlight was flickering. Screen wasn't scrambling, just the backlight. So, I took the phone apart again, took both ends out of the ribbon cable, gave them a clean and put the phone back together. I also had a look at the camera connection as the camera seemed to be out of focus too, and a photo and video I found on the phone also seemed to be out of focus.
Put it all back together, turned the phone on, and now the backlight on the screen barely works at all, and the camera isn't booting up at all!
I seem to have managed to make the phone worse
I'm hoping it's just the ribbon cable that's at fault, though I couldn't find any nicks or tears in it. Might try buying one, which will add a tenner to the cost at least, and it may not fix all the problems - the camera unit could be at fault. At least the phone makes/recieves calls, the mainboard seems to be fine (unless the ribbon connector on it is a fault, which I'm hoping not!)

i took a white screening e800 apart, to temporarily to try the flex cable on my mates e820 (basically the same phone, but the 820 is tmobile branded)as the lcd didnt work, but it didnt fit so i put it back in the e800 and now all the e800 does it flash when the charger is connected to it

Yes, Samsungs are notoriously tricky to take apart compared to SEs and Nokias, perhaps I should have got something simpler to fix!
Just ordered a new ribbon flex cable for £2.98 incl. delivery, which should hopefully come tomorrow or Monday, I'm hoping it'll fix the problem.
The screen backlight is working a bit more now, but the camera still isn't, has all the hallmarks of a ribbon cable problem.

just remember when handling the PCB or cables that you should always wear gloves, to prevent contamination from oils/sweat of the skin.
you could also look at some antistatic PCB cleaner for the more detailed clean of the problematic areas.

Too bad all I have here is Mercado Libre which isn't really all that great. Would definitely love to turn that old (but perfectly functioning) T106 into a Z610.

yup, here in Peru there is Mercado Libre too. In english it would be calles "Free Market" but it does it's job, I've bought about 4 things already

Well, I've just recieved my replacement D500 ribbon this morning. Going to shortly fit it to the D500, will post how I get on!
If it doesn't work, I may have to sell the phone on again as faulty, if I'm lucky I'll get my money back, but I'll see how I get on with this ribbon first...

I've had slightly mixed results. Took me a while to get the ribbon in place, despite it being described as a genuine ribbon it seems to be shorter than the one I've just replaced, so it was a bit tricky to put in. I also slightly damaged the connector on the PCB, so was expecting the worst when I put the phone back together and powered it on.
But I was surprised to find it seems to be fully working! Backlight now working, all keys functioning great! Though have two problems still. The camera now works, but is still fuzzy. I suspect the plastic cover on over the lens is either non-genuine or has become discoloured, I might try removing this to see if it makes any difference.
The other problem, perhaps more serious is as the ribbon is shorter, or perhaps me doing something slightly wrong is that the phone does not close quite flush. The slide works fine, activating the screen when slid up and locking the keypad when slid down, it just doesn't slide fully down, it's just a millimetre or two off shutting fully.
I think I'll have to sell the phone as being slightly faulty still, I should get my money back, perhaps make a small profit, but might give Samsung phones a wide berth in future as taking 'em apart and those ribbon cables are a pain in the @rse!
Oh, and if anyone's interested in what a dissected D500 looks like here's a picture:

I bet you began to sweat a little when you were struggling to get the ribbon back on.
Well at least its in a better condition than when you got it so it should go for more money. Someone else can have a go a rectifying the slider problem.
