Cheaper to the end consumer, yes. But we were talking about its real cost i.e. what you'd pay to buy one SIM-free or direct off the manufacturer. That's the only way you can accurately compare the cost/feature ratio.
If the iPhone is not subsidised at $500 or $600 then you must assume that its the 'real' cost. Unless of course, Apple also take a cut of the monthly contract fees too. But as the iPhone plans are basically the same as AT&T's standard plans, that seems unlikely unless AT&T are (stupidly) making less money on an iPhone than other models.
A. You can't buy the Iphone sim free so why compare them as sim free phones? Who knows what apple would have charged if it wasn't locked to AT&T
B. Apple does take a cut from the monthly fees

It'll be on one of the Uk networks mate when it arrives here so it'll be locked to whoever gets it.

Interesting... if true. That article, howver, is just speculation and not confirmed information - just an idea from a research analyst. We don't know for sure if that's the case.

I think it's better to wait for user input, like comments from real users. The reviews atm are just building up the hype. Having said that, there a lot of downsides mentioned in some reviews made by non-apple-jihadists.
(If anyone is offended by the use of the word jihad drop me a pm and I'll replace it with mac-talibans)

@Jools
Just for your information I am an X- AT&T employee and did try the Iphone.
I did have it in my hand for about 5 minutes during a meeting. I was not impressed. Although I did not get to try it for longer than that, due to a short presentation, I really was not impressed. I left the company two days after that and did not have the opportunity to test it further.
Frankly, it's not that big of a deal phone. I do remember a co-worker trying to make a call and complaining about how cumbersome it was to make a call. Had I stayed there, I would have been given a unit before the general public would get it's hands on this over rated phone.
Never the less I don't regret leaving. And yes I did try it for 5 minutes, so to answer your question...... I have sampled the crappy Iphone......
