You have to create your own shortcuts for gif icons.
Also, it does work if the menu icons you want don't have unselected.png.

Are you using Windows XP? Cuz you need to open a command prompt:
1) Go to "Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt"
2) In Command Prompt (DOS mode), navigate to the folder where the file "se_shortcut.exe" is located
3) Once located, type in: se_shortcut.exe and then the path of where you're gonna be storing the menu icons in quotation " " marks
4) Repeat Step 3 for every single icon you'll be creating a shortcut to
So for example:
I'm gonna put my png menu files in the "Other" folder of my phone's memory. I'm making a shortcut for "icon6_unselected.png", so in the command line, I type:
se_shortcut.exe "/usb/other/menu/live/icon6_unselected.png"
and press ENTER. Bingo, the shortcut file will appear in the same folder you stored "se_shortcut.exe", and all you do is repeat the above process for every single icon file.

Yeah, definitely

The "live" folder example I gave was from max_wedge's shortcuts, so for ease of understanding, I used "live" in my example. Just remember to link the shortcuts to your own personal folder!

Yup, you can do it with *.gif icon files as well

Just have to make shortcuts for them.
Not too sure about layout.xml, mate. Haven't tried linking a shortcut for layout.xml. I just deleted mine and chucked my edited one onto the phone lol.
