The iPhone is hardly the beginning of anything, it is a multimedia device at heart, targeted at fashion-conscious consumers and the cool kids. After all the hype, I wouldn't buy it if you paid me to do it.

I hope SE pick up on alot of these features and put them in a W980 type device, I'd be very happy then!

The sad truth is that if SE worked a bit better to promote the /existing/ tech on the phones, and worked at least a little bit with the developer community, and resolved whatever issues with PowerVR that prevents the emulator from functioning properly - then the iPhone UI wouldn't have been a selling point.

Of course - SE wants to bankrupt their smartphone division, and compete as a brand in marketing schemes they genuinely have no talent for - rather than attempt to provide a good product solution.

So sure - this spells the beginning of the end of a previously good company. When the iPhone can outshine their brand for a year, with tech that has been on the SE devices for three years. Then this certainly says something about how much of a failure SE is as a company, and how utterly too slow they are to take advantage of the possibilities they have at their fingertips. So - hello, unknown brand and open linux core OS.

Looks like the walkman/ipod fiasco all over again!

Yeah. Sony could've employed, back in 2000, any amount of the experts who desperately pushed OpenGL ES then. Or developed using svg tiny. Or flash. Or whatever - and used the phones at the time that was capable, to make capable media- players (with or without phone- functionality). They didn't, for whatever reason, and that's where we're at.

Ahhhh the Iphone, the device that proved the public WILL choose form over function if you tell them its "cool" the device that is almost an Ipod (But Apple do not want to damage Ipods so it will always be c**p)and almost a touch screen smart phone, shame it does not allow you to actually write anything like the really smart phones (Pseries) do!

I tried one out and cant see what all the fuss is about it does nothing a P1 doesn't do better already.

I think there's a certain amount of denial about the Iphone right now. Let's face it, it does SMS, email, calls, the web, music, all pretty well. Very well even. It's also now got 3G speed (in addition to wifi) and built in GPS. And it does a lot of smartphoney things like document editing etc. And the applist is about to start growing hugely (how long before the Appstore leaves UIQ3 for dust?)

The form factor may not be everyone, the camera's a bit poor, and there are still a few details left out, but let's not pretend it isn't a pretty good phone...

lol living in denial... the iphone has already surpassed the the UIQ family in functionality in some ways.. boohoo no mms or a2dp...

better touchscreen interface, better sound quality, better chipset (quad and triband) built in gps

better apps and more apps...

face it UIQ should just roll over and die.. SE needs to wake up...

this is coming from one of the first p1i users... that originally had nothing but praise for it...

If i remember correctly, thinks like java, flash, mms, copy+paste, a2dp, were already well discussed last year, in threads similar to this one...and the answer of the zealots was the same: "that is all software, Apple (aka, GOD) will bring them quickly on firmware updates, they are not like SE and others"

Guess what, ONE YEAR has passed, and those features are still absent.

You can say what you want, but MMS + A2DP + copy & paste + java, are things i cannot live without (neither a physical keypad, btw - and yes i tried the jesus phone)

Not to mention, there is no TRUE multitasking (who are they kidding) for 3rd party apps

I'll bet MMS, copy and paste, and maybe even Java are sorted out via the appstore.

I'm just playing devil's advocate here - personally I'll probably stick with WM which the Iphone genuinely has nothing much on - but I'd be worried if I was in charge of UIQ right now. UIQ3 has been in the wildnerness for far too long.
