Thanks everyone. I'll let you know how I get on with it.
I realise there'll be a lot of anti-iPhone people, especially on a site like this that's pretty much devoted to SE, and I even resisted getting one for all this time.
I didn't want to feel like I was buying into all the hype and following the masses, but having played on one the other day and reading up on it more, coupled with the fact that there isn't a must-have SE phone coming anytime soon (I've had my W810i for 2.5 years, waiting for one!), the iPhone it is.

@SloopJohnB, @apolloa, no wars guys. Back in 1988 I got one of the earlier Macs. The BIOS didn't support hard disks so I had to "borrow" the ROM contents from one of the newer models, burn it and install it on mine. It was fun - and highly illegal I think
That must have been when Windows 3 was just surfacing.

Got me G900 last month, and the whole experience is just terrible. Have only used SE for 5 years never had I with a problematic phone like this. Won't charge, led lights go wrong, won't search network..why do I want a phone with no power and cannot make calls? So after 2 weeks, I took it to service centre, and oh dear what a bunch of rude repairs team and several hundred annoyed customers. Wait for 2 hours just to get through the queue and another 4 hours to be told "Sir the parts inside your G900 is broken and we need to place an order for them."-What? Place orders?...Waited for 2 weeks after complaints and complaints and eventually I don't even care about it anymore. Finally I called them to ask if my G900 was fixed (can't even call me eh?). Waited for another 2 hours in the service centre with bunch of rude repairs team and several hundred annoyed customers, I finally took my G900 back. I never used it since and gave it away.
It wasn't all R&D's fault, if they could've provided better aftersales services it they won't give an bad image. I bought G900 and sold my P1i cos of G900's looks and about the same features as P1i.
On the other hand iPhone is not the best of phones seriously. Applications could just quit without telling you, and it's not quite user-friendly when it comes to transferring and sharing files.
There are pros and cons for everything, and apparently G900's cons outweighs its pros.

You got a broken G900 and you have not even tried using a working one?
The worthless service company would, at least for me, not be enough to say that the G900 is worthless... But hey, that's just me.

I try to keep up with the "SE 2008 portfolio" thread on here, but it's just so full of rumour, wrongness and techie nerdiness, I can't be doing with it anymore!
So, iPhone it is!
Good luck, but what was all that stuff about GPS systems then? you have chosen a phone that has no workable solution and could well not have one due to contractual arrangements!!!!!

These companies would surely not spend all that R&D if they had no possibility of a return, so I would expect a true navigation solution for the iphone 3g before too long
in the meantime the google maps works quite well given its got no voice

R&D of such companies might be a good sign and give some hope, while it is of course not a guarantee, as those companies can surely afford the cancellation of some of their projects due to certain reasons. Let's hope that it ends in success.
But until then I can hardly imagine a person buying the iphone 3g for its navigation capabilities unless he/she is not aware of the current situation.
As for Google Maps..
Well, it might be useful for someone who got completely lost, but that's about it.
It's very far from being a navigation app, as it lacks any of the specs (turn-by-turn, POI, voice, etc) of a real navigation app, and is therefore useless as such.
And, as mentioned earlier, positioning on Google Maps (via network data) can be done on any mobile phone, even without hardware gps, so...

It will plot you a route and move the map as you move. Its up to you to see where the calculated route takes you next when you reach a turn, and that is probably best suited to foot navigation rather than in car, but if you get off route you need only perform a manual route calculation again where the starting point is the current gps location.
agreed there is no POI but with a little fore-planning (which I almost always do) you can drop a few pins for sights you want to see and you have a good work around.
so while its far from ideal is certainly not useless
