I agree. Symbian UIQ is still the best working OS. An update so it would work better with the hardware thats availeble today would make it the most performent OS.

But i doubt that those guys who are sitting behind their desk understand this

UIQ came from Quartz (Ericsson development), which was one of the original UXs developed by the Symbian team (after they acquired the Ericsson lab), not Nokia. It was probably the best one, and if Nokia weren't as greedy as they proved to be, Symbian would've solved it's UX issues a looong time ago.

There were 3 UX patterns for different form factors: Pearl, Quartz, and Crystal

Then Nokia decided that they will force out all of these and go with their own.. namely S60, which is what we had for years, and it was probably the worst one of them all. Belle is much better, but at that point it was very late.

The Symbian team (mostly ex Psion guys) had the right idea.. I mean they fking had Scott Jenson from Apple doing UX work for them

But yes, UIQ would've been the best choice. From what I've read and heard so far, Symbian should've forced Nokia out and not let them dictate what's going on because simply.. where were they going to go ? Microsoft ? Its all so ironic.. Nokia tried to avoid Microsoft for decades but they finally got them.

Anyhow, here are 3 very informative articles, the second part deals with the UI issues. It also shows that the Microsoft-Nokia saga goes wayyy back.

Bill Gates was really mad when Nokia, Ericsson, and Moto went with Symbian @ $5-10 per license.. I think MS have been after Nokia/Symbian ever since.
