Funny thing is the inkjet printed oled tech was acquired by TCL from Joled which was established jointly by panasonic and sony. The funny thing is back in 2000's sony had an incredible in house display development but for some reason the fumbled pretty bad after that. First they formed a joint venture with samsung super lcd where they moved much of their tech but later sold the 49% shareholding to samsung along with some of tech that was previously developed by sony. Than japanese came together to form japan display which had 25% stake of sony, toshiba and Panasonic while the remaining 25% was held by other smaller firms. It was pretty impressive in early 2010's but since have been in shambles. It's to the point even sony doesn't use led panels from japan displays for their tvs. Further sony showcased flexible oleds back in 2008 which was also amalgamated into joled later on but that joled couldn't really get their stuff sorted and pretty much quit the market. Currently sony owns about 3% share in japan display

I think it comes down to money, money, money, as always. They may have had the tech and know how but didn't have the money to develop it into a marketable, consumer product that would turn into profit. Sony isn't the giant it used to be. These days, playstation, cameras, and bravia TVs are probably where it makes the most of its money. Audio is not what it used to be. Movies have never really made them that much, and as you know, mobile has been reduced to a niche pet project, essentially.
I've always been a sony fan since I was a kid. But companies must adapt to survive and sony adapted too slowly while carrying a premium price tag. They were architects of their own downfall. At least some of their bets have panned, but without playstation, they may not have survived at all.
