Okay, i've been trying to create some backgrounds using Paint Shop Pro 5, and i've come up with the following, original on the left, conversion on the right.

As you can tell, i've been having some problems with the conversion, i'm using the T68 colour palette, and following all8's guide for Contrast etc. But my images still turn out somewhat pixelated, which is especailly noticeable in the Gandalf pic (2nd from bottom) because of the light. Can anyone help me get round this problem?

I use Paint Shop Pro 7, which uses .pal files as palettes instead of .act files, and so I cannot say for certain that all8's 256.act file is incorrect. However, the 'Count Colours Used' function of PSP reveals that PortfolioT68.gif (which all8 says was created using that palette file) DOES NOT FEATURE 256 COLOURS. Close inspection of the image shows that a couple of colours are duplicated in the bright area on the right.

I see that all8 has determined that the t68/t300 can display 8, distinct, equally-spaced levels for each of red and green and 4 distinct blue levels and used this information to create this (excellent) palette. Fortunately, things can be corrected easily by checking over the pattern in PortfolioT68.gif that all8 has followed and then exporting the palette again.

I apologise to all8 in advance if this anomaly does not appear in 256.act.

### You can verify for yourself that 8 levels of red and green and 4 of blue are used by these phones by drawing an image consisting of three gradients. At the top of the image create a gradient from black (RGB 0,0,0) to red (RGB 255,0,0); in the middle a gradient from black to green (RGB 0,255,0); and at the bottom a gradient from black to blue (RGB 0,0,255). When displayed on the phone's screen, the red and green gradients are split into 8 equally-spaced stripes, while the blue is split into just 4. It just so happens that 8*8*4=256. The human eye is less sensitive to variations in the luminance of blue light, which, presumably, prompted the decision to assign the '4' to blue.###

For those who are using .act file for photoshop . Let me assure you it contained 256 colours coz i used a different picture to generate it

You know, I created almost exactly the same numbered image as the one above, to help to prove my point! I was about to say that you missed the two duplicated tones around the middle left (7 from the right and 4&3 from the bottom), but I see that you've corrected them in the bottom image.

Thanks for checking up on what I said - I thought I'd embarrassed myself, for a minute, there...

Here's where I get under everybody's skin again (especially all8's):

I don't suppose anyone has tried the ActiveX Mophun emulator, at www.mophun.com ? The colours used by that are ever-so-slightly different to those in these pallettes, but I've no idea if they're what the SE screens can display or simply what Mophun works with.

Can anyone find a definitive pallette!?

Serious flaws in my personality (which I plan to consult my doctor about) have led me to generate this list of distinct values that are taken by red/green/blue, as seen in all8's palette and in screen grabs from the Mophun emulator:

ALL8'S PALLETTE
Red/Green: 0, 37, 73, 110, 146, 183, 219, 255
Blue: 0, 85, 170, 255

MOPHUN EMULATOR
Red/Green: 0, 33, 74, 107, 148, 181, 222, 255
Blue: 0, 82, 173, 255

Here's where I become REALLY unpopular: if the levels are meant to be distributed evenly between 0 and 255 (which would make more sense), then they ought to be as follows:
Red/Green: 0, 36, 72, 109, 145, 182, 218, 255
Blue: 0, 84, 170, 255
all8's palette differs only because the values there scale between 0 and 256 and not 255 (the difference is purely down to rounding off - talk about PEDANTIC).

Should I be proud of myself? Probably not...
