That's just silly... it's like someone selling you a ferari but disabling one bank of cylinders so it's just as slow as other road cars! How daft!!

over the next few months, se will probably release firmware updates to solve the bugs that always turn up with new products. these are generally passed onto the general public via sim updates. however, they are unlikely to completely rearrange your k700's user interface and unless you can get another provider to flash your orange phone (highly unlikely unless you know someone who works there) or orange decide that they made a mistake and re-introduce the lost functionality (also highly unlikely), then your k700 will never be as good as it could be.
someone mentioned that the cpw had offered to flash the phone themselves, but do they actually have this capability? i thought they just contacted the service provider and got them to do it.
anyways, it's all irrelevent now as i'm no longer with orange.

excuse my ignorance but why does it matter what happens to the sim? as i put my orange sim that came with my k700i into an original k700i and it works beautifully. Surely if the phone itself is flashed there shouldn't be a problem?

As far as i'm aware (no expert, if someone can correct me please do) it is possible to receive a 'sim update' which can update features of settings on the phone (I believe it is most often used for settings ie. gprs username, server, password etc.)
It is also possible to 'flash' the phone - a process which updates the firmware (operating system if you will). This involves a lot of data (probably 1 or 2mb). Since you are updating the operating system of the phone effectively, it is not possible to do this without plugging the phone in to something (perhaps even taking it apart). Therefore it is not something done without special tools.
In order to restore the K700 to a non-Orange state, it would be necessary to do the latter. Presumably SE will give the updates (bug fixed firmware) to all networks and their service centres: therefore Orange will be able to udpate the phone, however they will retain their own customisations. However, this also means places like the Carphone Warehouse or SE service centres will be able to do it without Orange customisation.
SE servie centres are likely, I guess, to refuse to do it. Who knows why? The CPW are more likely to do it. In fact they have told me they would be willing to when the updates appear. However this does mean you are invalidating the SE warranty, and certainly Oranges.

Yes, if you've only got enough room in your sms inbox to accept one more (ie. after receiving it, it's full) then it will show the standard message received screen, with a photo if you have one assigned to the contact the message is from.

I've just phoned SE. They can't 'flash' the phone with the non-orange version because the phone is built for orange fw only. So, we're stuck unless orange put the functionality back in. With the SMS notification, Orange are currently looking into it for me so I guess it should work? Mine has worked 3 times in about 50 messages so that shows it should work?!?!

I've just been looking into it a little more, the other time it seems to do it is when I have a large (not sure exactly, I noticed it on 9) number of messages unread in your inbox, it'll display the proper SE new message screen, it's very strange.
