Never mind, found the Nokia one. I can confirm I converted an MP3 to a .amr file and I can set it as a ringtone. Only downside is that the max bitrate is still quite low so they don't sound as good as mp3's. Upside is a whole song came down to 300k...

thats a step forward jmbillings agreed

- but downside really is that an mp3 ringtone only needs to be 20-30sec (you dont need a whole song for ringtone) and would therefore also be only 300kb but would sound so so much better. AMR is naturally better than nothing but its low bitrate does sound lousy compared to the high bitrate mp3.
And the phone does support mp3 ringtones according to manufacturer specs. Ergo it should.
I gotta say - I think Vodafone has stolen something from people by doing this - people buy something with certain specs according to the manufacturer - Vodafone then takes away something to force you to spend more money with them. That is maffiamethods - like protectionmoney - or ransome - pure robbery. Its like selling a car with only 3 wheels and then demand money when you need to use the fourth wheel.
If I had bought my phone at Voda and had been cheated like that I would have demanded my money back and immediately taken my business elsewhere. I dont understand why anyone would put up with this behavior from a company - even if they dont need the mp3 ringtones. Its a matter of principals and I really feel honestly sorry for those that was cheated and hope somehow they find a sollution.

Hrmm, too bad it wasn't as simple as the Copyright flag. Though you know, it can't be much much more complicated. I doubt Vodafone is gonna implement their own secure method to prevent MP3s from other sources.
I recall something in the K700 white paper about DRM. Might be worth taking a look at.

Woah Zubnut !
I went to Phones4U yesterday and they exchanged my Vodafone branded for a GSM non branded K700i.
No charge no fuss. Technically the phone is faulty as I got it on the basis of the colour screen (icons) and the MP3 abilities.
Now I am WAAAAAAY happy with this baby !
nice one, took my one back to phones4u today - the manager did not know voda had done this shit to othe fones so he will be writing to them as he thought it was stupid.
plus he just swapped it for an unbranded one no problem. great.
menus on unbranded look much better and i can use mp3s woo-hoo!

True, taking it back would be the ideal option, but for me its not so easy - all my friends are on Voda and they are the only network with good coverage in my village. Plus they gave me the phone free as n upgrade on the contract I've had since '95 - I couldn't afford to buy a Sim Free one unfortunately.
But if I was in the market for a new contract and wasn't fussed on which network it was, then yeah, I'd be returning it and going to O2 or someone.

Just had a response from VF, a little late since i cancelled my contract
Dear John,
Thankyou for your email, With regards to the K700i the MP3 download function is not available on the Vodafone live! version until September 2004 when Vodafone will have copyrights on MP3 files.
The preloaded MP3 files cannot be used as ring or alarm tones on the current software version. In future software releases this function will be made available, you will be made aware when new software versions are launched.
Kind Regards,
Judith

I've taken my K700 back to Vodafone today and cancelled my contract. From the looks of that reply it just means the next update will allow to assign the pre-installed mp3s as tones etc, and that from september you'll be able to buy mp3s from VF Live! I'd rather go to another network and be able to use those features now instead of having to wait to use something i've paid for.

just thought i would let ppl know. If you are interested in going on the VF network in the UK but do not want to get the phone from them go to
www.onestopphoneshop.co.uk. You can get on the VF network fairly cheaply and get the phone for free. The K700 i got from them was the O2 version and it works perfectly. If you do buy from them, could you use my a/c number and make me some money

Here's hoping anyway

after lots of experimentation I've discovered that the K700 plays sound files in MP3, AAC, WAV, 3GP and AMR formats.
However, Vodafone have somehow restricted their branded phones to only play Ringtones as MIDI and AMR (Narrowband) files.
since MIDI (.mid) isnt a sound file, only instrument instructions, you are left with AMR as the only audio ringtone possible which sucks as AMR has sample rate of only 8000 (compared to all other sound formats which have sample rates up to 44,100). the sound is noticeably poorer than MP3/AAC
Also called Carphone Warehouse who said that they couldnt flash K700 yet.
I reckon if you want to have MP3 ringtones on K700 you must take the phone back to Vodafone and cancel the contract and get a new phone from somewhere else or wait for someone to be able to flash the phone and hope that that cures it.
after 10 years on Vodafone, I'm taking my phone back this afternoon and cancelling my account. they have really pissed me off with this.
If enough people do this they just might notice.

Everyone gets a 14 trial period, we took a o2 branded 6600 back to o2 shop for same reason. The fact is if you go to network shops for your contract you gonna get branded and not get as good a phone as I swear branding conflicts with phone anyway. Ask about places before signing like CPW or Link about branding. Stop moaning, dont like it, take it back and get another contract elsewhere
