I would like to take up your point about Nokia having small(ish) smartphones. The Pxxx series is intentionally larger than rival smartphones because it offers a large touchscreen; I don't think anyone could seriously doubt SE's technical ability to produce a smaller smartphone if they were so inclined.

I can see where you are coming from with regards to customers possibly opting for cheaper smartphones, but most people either don't require such features or don't care enough about them. The smartphone market will certainly expand, but I think we must be realistic and recognise that 'normal' mobiles will continue to dominate for many years yet.

yeah the smartphone market will expand more than the 3g market in the first instance siemens and sendo managed to release a good alternative to nokia if se did release a symbian s60 smart phone they could get more of a footing in the market what i would like to see is two phones one that is similiar to the t700 prototype and also a clamshel version of it but make it damn nice like the other prototyre of the k900 in the other threads that would put them in a really strong position samsung are doing the right thing relesing a smart phone for all three of the formats

hm after I read the entire thread, here are some of my very own and private remarks

1. every big company needs a strong and appealing motto

microsoft => where do you want to go today? (not that appealing, though)
nike => just do it
UPS => consider delivered
etc

2. memory stick has cca 22% of world market, so the technology is way more successful then you might think (SD has cca 28% and MS outsells CF cards)

3. p910 is priced about the same as nokia 9300 will be, whereras 9300 will beat p910 anytime. the 9300 is even a bit smaller then p910, but not with with so many compromises. you can use it as a regular cell phone and if you wish or need, you can take advantage of the 640x200 screen and full qwerty keyboard that oen can actually really use

4. the broad range of S60 handset is the way to go. with a plan, you can get the 6600 even for free! btw what can p900 do what 6600 cannot? virtually there is no difference. and thanks to the wider support of S60, one can actually do more with S60 handset ..

5. and yes, nokia is the one who has technical edge over SE. look at 6230 vs k700i. except for the display, 6230 is a generation ahead. it has got edge and mmc. something even S700 doesn't have. S700 has also this pathetic limit of 128mb on ms duo cards whereas you can put 1GB card into the 6230

6. regarding nokia market share, according to the latest surveys, they regained their marketshare again and came from around 27% inQ1/04 to 30% now. btw in Q2 nokia sold over 1.5 milon 6230s, which is a lot!

7. S60 could be even considered as mid-range cell phones now, you can buy 6260 now on amazon.de for only 375 euros. it has got S60, vga camera, mp3 player, radio, big display, push to talk, memory cards .. whould you buy k700, over it ?well I wouldn't .. or 6630, feature packed 3G handset could be bought for 529 sim free.

@aquila2

You raise some interesting points, but I feel as if this discussion is going round in cirlces with the same information being repeated ad infinitum.

Whether or not Series 60 smartphones can be classified as mid-range or not and irrespective of whether or not they are cheap enough to compete with normal mobile phones, the fact still remains that the greater majority of customers do not and will not want a smartphone. This isn't a question of price, but it is a question of complexity. Most people use their mobile for phone calls, texting and perhaps sending pictures\videos to friends with features such as games and music players bringing up the rear. Smartphones are, by their nature, more complicated devices and many most people will not want to own one based on this reason alone.

3G will replace 2G whether one likes it or not, so eventually all manufacturers will have to compete in the 3G maket. I still stand by the view that those who make the best initial impressions will be the ones who reap the most benefits as cutomers tend to like familiarity as long as it meets their needs. EDGE is something of a 'poor man's 3G', in Europe at least, where it hasn't really taken off; as far as I know none of the major GSM markets in Europe have implemented EDGE. For Europe and Japan, 3G is most definitely the most important consideration, as far as the mobile networks are concerned.

I don't think that we can say any one mobile manufacturer is, to any great extent, more technologically advanced than any other; the real consideration of how technologically advanced their handsets are is economics. Manufacturers aim to seel as many handsets a spossible and they have to price them accordingly, packing in as many features as posisble isn't always the way to increase sales.

I think that we should be very careful about how much emphasis we place upon smartphones and how important they will be to the overall mobile market. Every manufacturer has been placed back to square one, in a way, by 3G and I think it will be ver interesting to see, which of them can make the best use of the new market.

i'm not so sure about this tho. it was just only 2-3years ago when we have b/w phones. look at where we are now.

That is really a different issue, colour screens did not alter the functionality of mobile phones to any great extent. The addition of pictures and videos, even cameras, has always been put forward as more of a fun 'extra' than a serious attempt at competition with digital cameras or camcorders, although I do believe that they will offer serious competition in the very near future.

Smartphones on the other hand completely change the foundations of mobile technology, in that one no longer has a 'phone', but something more akin to a PDA and as technology improves, possibly more like a miniture laptop. The extra power of a smartphone is quite a different thing to simply adding a colour screen to a mobile.

yep, that's true colour didn't change the funtions much. well, it enabled MMS as another important ARPU factor

however, the 3G phones will be important. but look, in europe 8 of 10 3G phones are made neither by nokia nor by SE, but by nec, lg, samsung .. so unless nokia and SE wake up, we are going to see that asian companies will take over

smartphones are still too big and too expensive compared to the regular cell phones. and let's face it, 95% of GSM users just need phones for making calls, to text or send MMSs.

the thing is, the operators tend to love smarphones because of the ease of the customization. it could be done much easier then with a prorpietary OS

I would agree with your last post, especially about Nokia and SE having to wake up to the 3G market. Both Nokia and SE seem to be taking the 3G market less than seriously when one considers the rediculous fiasco in releasing the Z1010 and the fact that, out of ten 3G handsets for Vodafone's initial roll out of its 3G network, only one i made by Nokia!

Well I actually started this thread based on SE's Online update and the fact that they seem to be the first (in most case's IMO) on releaseing new tech advance's.
It was not about who sell's the most and what postion they hold.

It's just that Nokia never seem to bring anything new to the market other than crazy lookin phone's (oh and EDGE which aint a whole thing jst an improvement on gprs which works fine anyway).
Were as SE or /// have always been releaseing phone with hole new advance's e.g. full colour screen, bluetooth, melody composer, MMS,
