i have a k500i and that's my second phone, the first was siemens c55. when i bought the siemens, my target features were midi polyphony (so that i have plenty of choice of existing tunes in a standard format, not chained to some phone-specific format) and pc connectivity and existence of linux software. the midi part was ok, but the pc connectivity turned out to be a bit of a hassle to get going - it happened that consumer c55's are crippled and data cables can only be used for data connections, no access to the phone itself. developer c55's have OBEX support, which fortunately could be enabled on consumer units too. anyway, the siemens didn't make a big impression. many people badmouth siemens for having crap interface and whatnot, but i think the phone was ok. it wasn't great, but it didn't suck either. perhaps the biggest downside was the ugly design. and that is why i got the sony ericsson - i have been always enamoured with SE's design. people call it "blocky" or "conservative" or even "ugly", but actually the blockiness and conservatism are what i like in it. i do not want a phone shaped like a space ship or a running shoe. i find the clean elegance of SE's design exactly matching my aestethic taste. i wouldn't buy a phone only because of its design though, but having a phone that looks like a 10 year old's toy (and my opinion is that most phones by other brands look exactly like that) isn't something one would brag about :) there were slight issues with previous SE models that didn't make them bad, but didn't make them attractive enough to get me moving to buy one, but when i saw k500 and researched reviews and opinions about it, and got to test-drive one a bit, i was totally bought (k700 is great too, but it goes a bit too far for my needs - i don't need bluetooth and i intend to use the phone as a phone, not as a mp3 player, and the k500's resolution is perfectly acceptable, so there was nothing that would make me spend the additional cash to get a k700; and i hadn't even heard about k700's poor battery performance until after i bought the k500). linux connectivity remains a problem with the k500, but i've come to realize that perhaps the only phone brand that gets active linux development is nokia, and they are ugly as hell - far too ugly to be able to overlook it even if they are superior in other specs as some people claim them to be (i have never used nokia, i have no personal experience about their alleged greatness). fortunately, SE has great developer references freely downloadable from developer.sonyericsson.com, i guess i'll have to get to work myself on linux SE software :)

I got tired of waiting for the Nokia 3230. I'll probably keep my soon-to-arrive K700i for at least a year and then see what Nokia will have to offer. I know their upcoming models will be pretty amazing
