Sat my test in 1988 (no age jokes please).

The 25 question written test was one of 5 tests, all available to applicants to purchase and swot up on. I got 100%.
The 5 oral questions were tricky and I just scraped through

That got me a learner license which allowed me to go to a driving instructor for lessons.
After a minimum 3 months, I passed the practical test under the supervision of a police traffic officer and got a Restriced license (no unlicensed passengers under 20yrs, zero alcohol limit, 10pm curfew).

After another minimum period (9 months, this time) I passed another practical test, this time with a driving instructor, and recieved my Full License.

I estimate I've probably driven about 500,000 kms since then. Phew!

In 16 years I've owned/co-owned only 9 cars.
