Just a guess:
the mentioned trick might enable the GSM 900 network reception instead of the GSM 1800. This might increase signal strength.
But it is just a mere guess. Does the operator offer both GSM 900 as well as GSM 1800?

Here's something for O2 UK users - might not work on prepay though. Dial *3370# to activate Enhanced Full Rate, giving improved radio signal reception. Its free of charge and if you need to de-activate just dial #3370#
If you don't notice a difference after activation, your phone already has it.

Its just that whenever u send a data or any thing to the network, it searches for the network and so the signal strength itself gets higher.
Tell me if that stays long enough. Dont lie.
