I'm soon to be getting Mobile internet via my Mobile operator, T-mobile USA. I'm wondering if there is a way for me to Wi-Fi tether to provide internet for my ipod touch? I haven't rooted my phone yet, is there a non-rooted version. Barnacle WiFi Tether requires Root.
If I root my phone, will there be a way to return it to normal, 2.1, if I don't like it or something is wrong?
I remember from Ricky_D, Hobbs and others telling me about rooting my phone, but I still haven't. Would someone upload the links to how to root ur xperia x10?
I would only do it if there is a way to reverse the process, back to 2.1, if I so failed the first time.

There are some easy ways of rooting your phone. Just head over XDA forums or give a look at this android section of Esato.

You can use Z4root application from market which roots your X10 in 1 click very easily and if you don't want u can unroot back ( Before using the applicaition make sure to click the usb debugging option) . i am using barnacle for WIFI Tether to connect internet for my laptop.

@Big_D
To root your X10 2.1 you will need:
z4root - download the apk from the first post at the
developer's thread on xda and transfer to your phone and install
BusyBox - should be able to get this on the market, many rooted apps require you to have this installed
Suggested other apps:
Titanium Backup - backup apps and settings (e.g. your Angry Birds progress, very important

)
Barnicle Wifi Tether (or similar) - for wifi tethering
To root:
Step 1. Install z4root, open the app and press permanent root. It'll do it's thing then restart your phone.
Step 2. Install BusyBox from the market and run it. The app from the market is a BusyBox Installer so you have to go into the installer and press install to actually install Busy Box.
Step 3. (optional) run Titanium Backup and backup your apps and data
Step 4. (optional) wifi tether up your ipod, you PC and your laptop with a wifi tether rogram of your choice from the market
Voila! you should be rooted.
To un-root:
Step 1. Open z4root
Step 2. Press Un-root
Step 3. (optional) uninstall BusyBox
Finished!
I rooted my dad's X10 removed the bloatware and un-rooted it again without a trace in about 15 minutes (whilst taking a dump). Very straight forward using z4root. Permanent root option in there isn't permanent, it's always unrootable or if the worst happens you can always reflash your FW with SEUS.

Looks through this mess and you will find what you are looking for.Im not giving you a direct link because I think since you dont know much about Rooting,some reading on the subject will do you good.And the last thing I want is, I give you a link,something goes wrong and you look to me for solutions.Not cool.
It isnt that big of a deal nowadays rooting a phone.Its become a one click affair.Also if you want to unroot,that option has also become available to you.
Good luck if you do decide to do it.
