@ da brixsta,
I know we've touched on this subject before, but the prices of cars in SA, both new and second hand, is nothing short of ridiculous. The fact that it's not even feasible to ship ultra-cheap used cars form here to SA, because of the restrictions and duties levied on these, is keeping the very 'protected' SA motor industry monopolisers happy.
My nephew returns to SA next month, having worked damn hard to pay his own way to study architecture in PE, over the 2 years that he has been here.
Now he is going to need a car too; and it seems the going price for something like a good used Toyota Tazz 1300 is around the R45000 mark; a definite chunk of his savings.
I just wish there was a way to get vehicles from here into SA without all the additional red tape complexities and costs, because it'd be such fun to give a royal 'up yours' to the overpriced local car market.

Here's 2 examples that I've just randomly copied and pasted from http://www.autotrader.co.uk :

1996 VOLKSWAGEN POLO 1.0 L 3dr Hatchback
Price:
£690ono.

Features: 62,000 miles MANUAL RED Petrol 3 Door Hatchback Full Description: Glossary of Terms
Manual, 62,000 miles, Red.Manual, 62,000 miles, 2 OWNER'S FROM NEW, LAST OWNER 6 YEARS,FULL 12 MONTHS' M.O.T,VIC CHECKED, COLOUR CODED BUMPERS, COLOUR CODE ELECTRIC DOOR MIRRORS, RADIO CASSETTE WITH REMOVABLE FRONT PANEL, ADJUSTABLE STEERING COLUMN, REV COUNTER, LOW INSURANCE, CHEAPER ROAD TAX, IDEAL 1st CAR, ANY TRIAL OR INSPECTION WELCOME. £690. ono

MOT (Ministry Of Transport) is the annual roadworthy certificate.
Not bad for just under R10 000...

Another example:

1992 TOYOTA CAMRY 2.2 GL 4dr Auto Saloon
Price:
£599

Features: 68,000 miles MANUAL GREEN Petrol 4 Door Saloon Full Description:
Manual, 68,000 miles, Green. One previous owner. Full Service History. £599
_______________

Yes, we know the reasons why used cars are so much cheaper here, but it's just frustrating that, even with the current shipping rates, it would be a godsend for many people in SA if cars from here could be imported without the absurd restrictions imposed on these imported vehicles.

@ Francois,
Have you seen any Rammstein videos? I'm sure you remember their appearance in that Vin Diesel movie, xXx.

Obviously you could've googled these yourself, but anyway, here a few choice ones:

Links 234 remains my fave Rammstein vid , typical bludgeoning riffs with some unmistakable Teutonic ‘oompah’ thrown in:

http://video.google.co.uk/vid[....]579931379033848085&q=links+234

..and when they managed to make themselves incredibly bloated for the Keine Lust video...
http://video.google.co.uk/vid[....]88033035424706619&q=keine+lust

Then there's 'Sonne', a warped take of Snow White & the 7 dwarves in this vid here:
http://video.google.co.uk/vid[....]d=-2115830352321800041&q=sonne

...and generous dollops of sad-but-true satire in the song 'Amerika':
http://video.google.co.uk/vid[....]585094223192066946&q=rammstein
..with some Rammstein fans making their own music vids for LOTR:

Das Orc Muziek?!

@ wanqa, would love to watch those videos, but GoogleVideo chows bandwidth, and day 2 of the month and I have already used 1/5 of my bandwidth which I am supposed to use. Bandwidth is so expensive here! Things should get better soon I hope...

So Vodacom just responded to my complaint of the weasel and the scratches. I blatantly refused to drive through to there to get rid of them, and they are sending a driver to come pick it up. It is frustrating that I have to make it so hard for them, but I did originally tell them I want that thing gone, and instead I got it back and 2 game demos that I cannot remove. If enough people start giving them crap about that, I wonder if they will stop putting it on the phone and maybe just provide it free online for all the little 3year olds who want it on their handsets...

@786KBR,
Gee, wonder where they got hold of that Subaru...must be a mission to find things like oil filters, gaskets etc. for it, unless they're somehow generic with later Subarus, like the earlier Imprezas etc...(Can't make out the name on the left of the car in the pic...)

Can't even find anything similar here:

So Vodacom sent a driver to come fetch my phone. Got a Nokia 1100 as replacement this time. They better hurry this time, I am not sitting without my phone for another week again. If things work out nicely then I will comment on Vodacom doing well, if not, the name of Vodacom will have mud flung at it. So far, I am impressed.

For people who arent obsessed with throwing their cash around, buying a car new is really just a waste of R50k. If you look through Auto Freeway there're usually at least 1 or 2 good buys.

I wrote my Art exam today... I swear, i've never flipped through fewer notes prior to an exam in my life! Luckily it went somewhat smoothly and my skills at making a decent argument can disguise my lack of facts. But i doubt that's an A... and if it aint... and if I dont get my A aggregate... I can forget about having a lekker 2007:(

@786KBR: That Subaru is a Kenyan registered second-hand import from Japan...they're pretty common in African countries where brand new cars are too expensive for the locals. Like the wanqsta rightly says, getting spare for those vehicles are a bitch and a pretty expensive exercise.

When in Durban last year I saw a lot of imported vehicles for sale at ridiculous prices...like R15 000 for a 10 year-old 1600.

Hi guys. Having trouble at work so i'm not posting that much. I have a quick question. Is there a java app to allow you to view pdf and doc files on standard mobile phones (similar to the samsung picsel viewer) available? If not why not? Thanks.
