errrr.. I forgot to say that I dropped out of the MTEL craze because MTEL is down in Jos where my fiancee is. My MTEL SIM is back in the cooler.
I hear that even some MTEL MSC's are down... the company is in crisis. The free promo may need to be extended if they are to get the states back on board.
BTW: MTEL GPRS was the fastest of all... so maybe thats why we want it badly.

GPRS runs on excess capacity and unused bandwidth. Mtel has the least number of active subscribers and the highest level of dropped calls. It is logical that their GPRS should be fast - so much unused capacity on that network.
Meanwhile, NCC says NITEL fixed landlines have dropped from 400,000 in 2001 to 70,000 at present. Na wa!

The "excitement" about Mtel gprs as coola said is in the speed as well as the price. its better than paying seven times more for a slower connection than is almost as unstable. so far i havent been charged yet.

Lets conduct a survey here. Everyone should do a networh search and determine if Mtel is still active in their different locations.
In Gbagada where I live, no Mtel signal.
in Benin (GRA and ekehuan Rd.) Mtel signal is available.

@Amby: Detailed info? Less than 10 hours ago, the MTN website did not have ANY info at all on the service!
There's no 3G coverage at my end. I'll check when I am at other locations.

For some reason, my phone browser cant go to that MTN link. but are they serious about offering 3.5g? it would be a miracle if it was just 3! i gotta see what (if anything) they have to say.
by the way, no 3g signal in KD. im off for Abuja later. i'll see what is there.

i think its just a publicity stunt..i use 3.5g here in london and the spped on my phone is at least twice as fast than my starcmms internet in lagos. i think its sad that they are hardly any dedicated ISP companies for individual consumers in nigeria..even cobranet only offer 128kbs, i once took a speed test on my n95 and it was 1.1mb....so its illogical to think mtn can provide this service...from what i know technologies mature together....lets hope for 3g first before 3.5g
