Oh right! Might be that the router isn't configured correctly? Are you plumbing in a new internet service provider and running their software to sort everything out?

Yes, thats right. The Broadband is ready to be used as I can detect it and its signal strength etc via a Netgear router.

But when I try and enter the network key to connect I get a message telling me with will only allow either 5 or 13 ASCII characters and my network key is 8 block capitals.

So I turn the wep off then connect but nothing. The connection is supposed to appear automatically in network settings but it doesn't.

It looks like a problem with the Network Adaptor as although this seems to be working ok in the device manager it si supposed to react when I plug the network cable in but it doesn't.

Should I try reinstalling the network card? Is this a bug with XP in particular? I am on SP1, will acquiring SP2 make any difference?

I'm stumped.

Very strange! It shouldn't have anything to do with SP1 but it might be worth a look on google just to make sure, I'll have a look in a little while.

Can you ping the router from the command line? Click 'Start', 'Run', type in 'cmd' and then Click 'Ok'.

Then, type in 'ipconfig' and press 'Enter'. If nothing happens, try 'ipconfig /renew'.

If it lists a 'Default Gateway', type in 'ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' (where xxx.xxx is the default gateway IP address). This will show if the computer can actually talk to the router.

A nice little tool that might solve this problem is 'Winsock Fix' available here

I've got a problem!!!

My PC has randomly started crashing?!? It just locks up! I can't reboot in anyway i have to turn it off at the plug. At first it seemed totally random but now certain sites make it happen!? if i try to access products on vajacase.com it'll lock up, and the same if i try and access the Drayton-Manor website? I havent changed anything lately in my setup or installed much new? I tried doing a system recovery thing to 3months ago but it has made no difference? Any deas Cyco? It's getting really annoying.... I was thinking maybe i need a flash update or java but they both seem to be up to date? Could it be a virus?

Sounds more like the CPU is overheating to me. Take the side off and give everything a bloody good clean, particularly the heatsink and fan on the CPU. I use a hoover to get the dust out!

If that doesn't do it, you might need to take the heatsink and fan off and apply some thermal grease to the surface of the CPU. You can get thermal grease easily on-line

The reason it happens with certain websites is because if a site has lots of flash animation, the CPU has to work harder meaning it gets hotter more quickly. The harder a CPU works, the hotter it runs.

Hi Cyco,

Still no joy.

However, can you tell me this:

When I go into the device manager and open the com ports, the only one I can see is the LPT1 Printer port.

Should I not have a list of many more communiction ports? I seem to remember there being more than just the printer port available.

No, not nowadays. Not unless your PC has a physical COM port (the old 9-pin RS 232 type) or certain applications have set up virtual COM ports like SE's m-router for PC Suite app does.

I guess now you need to figure out whether it's a hardware or software problem. The easiest way on a laptop would be to try a USB to NIC converter like this one

You can get them cheaper on E-Bay. If it works, then your network port is most likely buggered. If it doesn't, then it's either windows or the router.
