Well, in terms of raw image quality I don't think Sony stands a chance.. they just don't have a phone that has the required imaging hardware to go against the 1020/808 combo.

I must say (as an owner and fan of the two phones you mention), I would love to see Sony create something that would bring back that rivalry. I do LOVE my 808 and really appreciate all my 1020 can do.... BUT - I have recently bought a Garmin 2597 for my car and love the smartphone link connectivity options it has with android.... I would really like to not have to use my 1020 as a hotspot for my ST15a to power those abilities... but in the meantime, I WILL as I'm just not that interested in anything android at this time... I hope that changes soon but image capability is PRIORITY ONE.

Its a bit childish of the two companies though. And a waste of peoples time, because we all know the 1020 will trounce Sony's effort. Nokia have just invested much more time and effort into their imaging than Sony ever did.
Its a bit stupid of Nokia to challenge another company on something they know they're already the best at by a mile. Its like playing on an Xbox with a 5 year old and knowing you could beat them on Fifa at any time. You just don't play the bully by beating the underdog.

I don't know.... I think back in the day some of the cybershot phones were responsible for giving a good enough run to Nokia for them to try so hard at releasing such innovations as the N95, N86, N8, 808 and 1020.... If Sony were to just put SOME effort into it, I think they could at least make a device to be a serious contender. Could you imagine if they decided to just say F-IT, okay Nokia.... you want a challenge, here's a challenge.... THEN they actually follow up with dropping some BOMB A$$ device on the market with a sensor comparable to the 1020 which could output 5, 8 and 12mp raw files, xenox, variable aperture, IR cut filter, ND filter and FULL manual control (including the ability to adjust flash output)... I WOULD BE ALL OVER IT!!!
Even if it was just debatable that the images were anything like the 1020 (not necessarily even the 808) I would be aboard.

that was the time when Sony Ericsson was more Ericsson than Sony. When it turned the opposite, Y'all know what happened.

Imaging hasn't gone well for Sony (SE) since the arrival of the N95. Back in the days of the K750 onwards, all was rosy and imo Nokia were miles behind. SE were by far in a league of their own.
Then came the N95 and SE lost the plot completely. Its like they just handed over the keys to the imaging realm to Nokia. They haven't caught up since.
I'd love to see Sony make a proper cameraphone, but they wont. Their last proper cameraphone was the Satio - and that didn't compare to the N8.
