I'm a bit affraid about the information from My-symbian though. Satsuma said:

I have been told by a gentleman who's pretty high up, from Kista, that the h/w platform is not a new one - i.e it's not OMAP3; that doesn't mean it might not run modified existing h/w though."

I saw that too.

Here's what I think about that:

Not to discredit the person who posted that, but Paris (at that time Bella) went through massive hardware updates and changes in November, which is why it wasn't announced then like it should have been. The massive hardware change was, according to what has been said here and at USEB over and over, a different processor/platform. Bella became Paris when the internals were completely changed.

Also, ares just said the phone in the live shots is of an old prototype--possibly even the oldest. If it was this proto the poster from my-symbian saw, it would stand to reason it didn't have a fancy new platform because at that point, it didn't.

In the end, we won't know until the 14th at the earliest. It very well may not be OMAP3...but it has got to be some kind of new platform, or else a lot of the things inside Paris won't be able to function correctly or at all (for example, HSDPA). Something has to account for all the new tech inside Paris (and new to SE UIQ phones) and regardless of what kind, some kind of new platform is in use.

Maybe hes indicating OMAP2 N95 type processor for paris which is not that bad considering it's much faster than the old philips nexperia of P990i. But even the old nexperia has gained some speed improvements in the G-series through optimization. So if these speed tweaks also applies to paris along with the better OMAP processor and some benefits of Demand Paging due to Symbian 9.3 should translate to better performance

Who knows? those touch buttons might have haptic feedback

i certainly hope it is OMAP3. it would be a bit disappointing for them to use 2 yr old hardware, even if it was revamped or modified.

^^Add ATi imageon graphics chip on top of this phone and it'll be a graphics killer - i wish nvidia would manufacture a chip compatible with the Symbian APIs but they didn't. ATi with it's M100(formerly 2298) chip has made it possible for symbian devices to utilize better graphics performance. and not to mention that M100 chip has a dedicated audio and video signal processor. that'll be a great news if this type of chip was implemented on paris' platform.

Um doesn't Nvidia have a chip in the N93?

N93 uses PowerVR graphics integrated on it's OMAP 2420 cpu. no nvidia chip has been made compatible with symbian phones. so for those who yearn for an nvidia chip on their phone should look elsewhere (WinMobile, Android or OSE )

laurenke01,

That's all true, but I've got numerous people saying it'll be making use of the old P1/W960 platform, like the other UIQ devices, with only a few minor changes, such as the addition of a GPS.

Although I cannot see why would do this (OK, actually I can), there's not a need of having another generation mid-end smart phone platforms.

I can see why SE would do this too = profits & profit margin.
But I still see this failing in the long run. Its about time the make their flagship phone, a smartphone at that, be that. Smart! Putting in old hardware is a recipe for failure and not a smart decision giving the last time they did it caused anguish (P990i). I feel that the UIQ platform should be able to show off its power and not be optimized to reduce that power for usability.

Sorry guys ... just a pause for the cause.

Remembering phones of the past, that never made it out.
