@woz2010 the official UXP update from SE is pretty big actually. There are one or two UI improvements that have been highlighted here already e.g.landscape mode in mediascape etc but the big thing it adds is dual-touch/pinch-zoom in the web browser, maps and 3rd party apps etc. If you're not interested in rooting your device and flashing it to the global generic FW (or others that are already out) then you kind of have to wait till the FW gets approved by the appropriate people before you get the update.
@Muhammad-Oli if you're already rooted and have xrecovery it's very easy to install 2.2 or 2.3 and very easy to come back to your handset exactly the way it is now if you don't like it. xRecovery backup will basically take a complete image of your phone how it is, all data, widget placements, settings, apps, everything and store that image on your sd card for if and when you want to return to that state.
After moving to 2.2/2.3 you may lose a little functionality, as far as I know none of the custom ROMs on xda have the camcorder working, not all the ROMs out there have the wifi tethering working, a few people have had some problems with market force closing and there are other stability issues. The customs ROMs aren't as stable as the SE firmwares, some people have no problems, some people have enough to not want to keep it.
You will gain things like Flash 10.1 in the browser, none of the SE added bloatware (Mediascape, Timescape, Moxier et al), a faster and smoother experience in most cases and a few random FCs and reboots if you're unlucky.
Just remember to backup your current system in xRecovery before you flash in the new FW and you'll be 99% risk free as you can always come back. The 1% being the odds that a file gets in some way corrupted and bricks your phone beyond repair.

Thanks for the information guys. I'm still considering, but I'll probably end up doing it as soon as I'm bored one evening!
Just installed the latest official 2.1 update and it's A LOT faster. I went with a full erase and it has made things so much snappier in all aspects. Couple of new (and no doubt useless apps) but at least some of the Moxier ones have disappeared. Looks like a new calendar app and a few other nice improvements too. Nice.

Ok, thanks for the reply Ricky D. I have just had a look at Davinci to see what the options are for a generic SE X10i firmware so I can get the update and I have no idea which one to select ??
Help ??
I have currently (I think) Orange firmware.

From what I hear DaVinci is bricking X10s and there are certainly ways you can get the new FW without having to pay anyone anything.
To do so:
go to
this link
download the generic global FW
download Flash Tool 0.2.6
install the flash tool
unpack the ftf file (from the global generic firmware) to the folder named 'firmwares' in the Flash Tool folder
run X10FlashTool.exe
click flash
on the left should be FW version 2.1.A.435, on the right should be the contents of the firmware, click OK
follow the on-screen instructions
reboot and enjoy

Downloading mine now. But I'm thinking, how easy is it to put 2.2 on? What will I lose vs. what will I gain?
-cons (as far as i noticed)
you will lose the camcorder (and SE's camera UI) stock froyo is faster but less options ( i am running beta3 of FreeX10)
automatic brightness does not work (drains your battery twice the speed as with SEs stock rom
HW buttons no lights? (i don't care but some ppl may do

)
I have issues with BT dropping sound and will have to reconnect if i multitask during soundplayback
-gains (as far as i think)
flash
access to 2.2 apps/games.
UI speed
The feeling of runing 2.2 with a custom rom
i bet there is more (but things that i dont use/need)
it's still beta so i guess more cons than gains at this moment.

I have to extend my thanks to Ricky D as well. I was just about to use Davinci team to flash generic fw
As the MT update, I have had a good play with MT and It works great. I have not had a proper look at Mediascape but it looks nice. I feel the phone to be nice and smooth were mine has been a bit laggy. All in all a good update for me
And I have just noticed this is my 100th post

Also thanks to Ricky D.
After seeing your post I decided to give the x10flashtool a try. Have now flashed my black uk x10 to the recent global generic firmware, root, remove moxier etc and optimize (JIT ?) it.
Couldnt believe how easy that was. Gonna have a go at flashing my white French x10 to global generic later on.
What else can I do now using flashtool ? Dont want to use a custom 2.2/2.3 yet until a fully working one becomes available.
Again thanks Ricky for pointing others in the right direction B-)
