@Jolitorax

never watch movies on a PDA or Smartphone - once you've used a PSP you wonder people bother with other devices for movies.

Please remember the P990 is not one-dimensional, its not just a device for movie playback.

16 MB RAM? ROFL, my W900i has 470 MB internal memory, and never crashes. Why didn't SE put in a real chunk of RAM for the new flagship model? I don't get it.
Tried a friend's P990 yesterday. Stuffed my MSDUO Pro into it to try video playback. On my memstick I have some full length movies coded for W900i. Same QVGA resolution as the P990, clip size about 150 MB, should work, but dit it? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Big disappointment! Phone crashed and had to be booted. P990 is not a device for me. No way.

Probably because the W900i isnt a SMARTPHONE ...probably couldnt run half the apps the p990i can. The W900i is a one dimensional phone, i played with one and although its a nice phone, its definitely not something i would buy myself.
As Jah said you dont watch movies on a pda or phone, dont understand why people would want to anyways.

@jolitorax

1 - in fact P990 can play videos encoded at higher bitrates than w900, easily...

2 - I noticed how you mistaked w900 internal storage memory with RAM...please get your facts straight

3 - i watch tv series episodes on P990...no problem at all

Just received my P990 yesterday. A few thoughts.

1. As soon as I received the P990, I updated firmware. So far, I have not had any problems with bugs or shut downs. I have to say I'm not a power user like some. Also, do people think they keep updating the same firmware, ironing out small problems? The new firmware will only come out with big updates? The reason is I haven't had any of the problems that I've read in a lot of posts.

2. Build quality is very good, the screen is better than M600i.

3. The A2DP and Mulimedia does not sound as nice as the M600 or the K800. It's the worst out of the 3, but still very good. It does need to be louder.

4. The Camera quality is good. A lot better than the Tytn that I have.

So far, it's been great. I have to play with it some more, but generally I think it's the best convergence device out there. Seems snappier and faster than my M600, but slower than the Tytn. Multimedia is better than the Tytn. Construction feels better than the Tytn as well.

4.

the w900i doesn't have a symbian OS not like the p990i. Second the w900i is a music phone not a SMARTPHONE as jah said. Third is the RAM is defferent from the internal storage. RAM is the memory that process the applications. But w900i is also a good phone that is my 2nd choice before the p990i.

Being a SE P-phone user for four years I know the difference between a smartphone and "ordinary" phones like the W900i. Some of you tell me to get my facts straight when I compare the RAM of the P990 with the internal memory of the W900i... I'll try to clarify once more: Some of you earlier in this thread indicate that the P990 provide about 16 MB of RAM for applications, if I understood you right. Of course the P990 has a bit more memory alltogether, but obviously not enough. Then I pointed out that the W900 has 470 MB of INTERNAL MEMORY (not to be confused with RAM for running applications, of course), just to indicate that making phones with a bit more memory is not unknown to SE, and after the experiences with memory limitations in both the P800 and P900 - why SE once again makes a phone with similar limitations, well, that's what I don't understand. Anyway, we all hope the P990 will be a useful device in the end, but at least my first hands-on experience was very disappointing, with several crashes while performing some rather simple tasks. I suspect that the phone I tried had an early firmware, but still it was a phone that SE has sent to the market, promoted as a complete office and entertainment device etc etc, and it worries me that it really did not work! And when I say "did not work" I don't mean that it don't work at all, but imagine if a CAR had the same stability as the P990... it would be in the workshop most of the time, not working.
Of course, cellphone geeks like ourselves, who are online with SEUS daily and install new firmware all the time, we are prepared to live with the flaws of the new phone for a while, but many "office users", who buy a high-end device and expect it to work straight out of the box, will be very disappointed with the performance of the P990 if SE don't provide a "bugfree" firmware very soon. After all, it's been almost a year since the P990 was revealed to the market... one should think that SE had some time to sort things out by now. If it's not ok now, will it ever be?

Thanks for clarifying. I think in your original post it was not clear you were distinguising between RAM and flash storage.

Personally I think the low RAM problem on the P990i isn't directly SE's fault, although they have know about the issue for some while - maybe even long enough to have done something about it, but also possibly not.

Ultimately I believe the problem originates because UIQ3 runs in RAM whereas UIQ2.x ran with XIP (eXecute In Place), this meant that from the outset the RAM footprint of UIQ would have been significantly more than UIQ2.
Now the problem (which isn't unique to SE Symbian 9.1 devices, it equally applies to Nokia S60 Symbian 9.1 devices too which also have severe RAM issues) appears to be simply because Symbian have set the RAM requirements for their new OS too low. I'm sure 64Mb is probably enough for the core OS, but by the time you have added either the S60v3 or UIQ3 GUI on top 64Mb certainly appears to be inadequate.
Now I'm sure over the coming months there will be a lot done to improve the situation with better memory management and fine tuning (and juding by the way memory leaks on the P990i at the moment I think a huge amount can be done here), but ultimately more physical RAM is the ideal long term solution.

What stereo bt headset are you using?

I know that sound quality is pretty subjective but im using a HBH-DS970 with my p990i and the sound quality is excellent. Bass is present and channel separation is acceptable. My only complaint is that i wish it could be louder (although its not that soft really).

I was just using a W810i a while back and all i can say is that i dont miss my walkman phone.

Hi!
First post......

I am close bying the 990, I had p800 and p900, on the p910 the inside keypad was so small. On the 990 they kind of look as small as the 910. I have normal hands, but when I tried in the store it looked like I had the whole alfabet under my thumb.... I use sms a lot so it would not be a problem with flip closed, but now I like to send more e-mail with the phone. Ok, I can use the stylus.

Are you guys using the inside keypad or?

You can use stylus thru handwriting recognition or virtual keyboard.
