It's a smart phone, but only tri-band GSM + 3G and no EDGE and 3,5G?!
What do you think of Sony Ericsson? Haven't you heard about Nokia 95 perhaps?

I also must remind you about Sony Ericsson Z750: the only SE which is
quad-band GSM + EDGE + 3G + 3,5G. And it's not a smart phone!

I was hoping to see if the camera UI had been changed. Nice product, now we need a version.

if there was nothing wrong with the design in the first place, why would SE make radical changes to it? consumers wanted a camera, they got a 3.2MP a/f camera. consumers wanted wi-fi, they got it. and you lot are complaining just cos' of the lack of EDGE? why EDGE when you can go 3G? it's not exactly SE's fault that US markets are slow to adapt to the latest cell-broadcast technologies is it?

OK because the DESIGN is already over 1 yr OLD! This does NOT bode well for design and as the next qtr rolls around the phone will look dated. Don't tell me you DON"T CARE about how your phone looks, as you'll be staring at it every moment you interact with its touch screen. I STILL say the P990 looks hot.

However, EDGE you BETTER READ up BIGTYME on EDGE and its qualities, latency is the SAME as 3G upon INITIAL TCP/IP querring for URL's/FTPs/SSL connections etc. And if you STILL don't see the light search for EDGE+Max Wedge + Prom1 for around say 1+ year ago, you'll get GOOD arguements on BOTH sides.

Still not satisfied? Well then ASK you provider (Vodafone - France/UK/China, or Orange - France/China, or other 3G providers WHY they implemented EDGE over 3yrs after launching UMTS/3G?! its not due to the limited quantities of SE EDGE phones or BlackBerry's either.

EDGE + 3G = QoS (Quality of Service)!

Back on topic ...

This phone SHOULD perform, I just don't see existing owners of the P990i wanting to take another chance or M600 owners doing a quick upgrade after spending so much and having contracts with their providers.

I'll get n95 this monday/tuesday, my moto "if you dont satisfy me the i leave you" it is easy isnt it (eventhough i MAY buy p1 to subtitude my w950)

I wonder if have begining to lost their power user like me, as i reckon that many2 esato member go to n95. Its a sad story for , but it is the price they must pay for abandoning their customer

Hi Peter,
I actualy quite like the P1 what is the build quality like?

I have a P990i and W950i however the W950i is already creaking and the back slides from side to side when presing the jog dial, so Iam actualy looking to replace it shame because its a great weekend phone otherwise.

I have been repeating the p(700)1 is not the p990 successor for ages, finally people are paying attention.

Well Sony Ericsson claims other....

Quote in Swedish from the magazine Mobil:
"P1 är en fortsättning på P990"
Poor translation
"P1 is a continue on the P990"

Well I really dont care if its an successor or not, I will still buy it asap.. I just hope I can get my hands on one before I go on vaccation... (21 July)

No HSDPA
Average camera
No GPS
Only 802.11b WLAN
No flip

SE, what has happened?! I loved my P800 and I honestly think it's gone downhill from there. From a truly innovative product we end up with this drab, middle of the road smartphone.

Don't get me wrong, the competition has its faults. The N95 on release was the buggiest N-Series ever. But a couple of firmware fixes later and the N95 will be an amazing device. The forthcoming E90 is the pinnacle of the Communicator series of which I've had or tried most of them. Highly specced like N95, just a different target market.

Same too with WM. WM has many publicised issues but WM6 has ironed out many of these and the HTC Advantage, Kaiser and Wings have phenomonal specs. Like the N95, forthcoming WM handsets are really trailblazing the future in mobile telephony.

The only thing that will save this device, and IMHO, SE's reputation as a smartphone manufacturer will be if this device works PERFECTLY out the box. No niggles, no issues. I'm not a fanboy for any OS / manufacturer, I've had them all and will continue to search for the perfect smartphone but this is a long long way short.

I love the design. I think it is beautiful.

I'm also happy to learn that the p990i's successor is on it's way. I've got 4 months to be impressed.

Overall nice design despite a lack of certain key functions.

P1i is not an upgrade to P990i.
It has only:
1. 128MB RAM instead of 64.
2. 3.2MPix camera instead of 2.
The rest is the same or worse (no flip ).

Personally i the only thing i don't like in P1 is the keyboard, other then that it looks pretty good. But i'm going to stick with P990 and see what happens next after P1....
