I tell why Iphone is all hype and no substance.
We know from hardware specs it is just run-of-the-mill. There is no debate needed here. So the "euphoria" cannot be caused by this factor.
So we are just left with the UI and the big tap-screen. UI has been touted by Apple that it is
easy and intuitive. We know as a fact that iphone cannot do much except for making calls/sms, taking/viewing photo, playing music and surfing the web. Let's eliminate this one by one in reverse order.
1. Surfing web (incl. 3rd "widget) - Iphone UI seldom comes into play as the interaction is with web-pages. Strike one.
2. Playing music - How much you use the UI to enjoy music? Just a few button presses. How much "easier" can iphone UI make it? Not much I think. Strike 2.
3. View/Taking photo. Camera ui/ops looks similar to those implemented in the newer n-series and SE k800. So iphone did the copying? Strike 3.
4. Making calls/sms. You need up to 8 taps to make a call unlike 1-2 button press in other phone. Is this "a revolutionary in ease-of-use UI"? Far from it. Strike 4....(well correctly speaking iphone UI is out after 3 strikes)
Well, you have it. Iphone is ALL HYPE and NO SUBSTANCE.

like the preview @ pcworld.com (or whatever their url is) - blaming "fanboys" for the undeserved hype
familiarity breeds contempt ?

mib1800,
Lets analyse those 4 points again:
1. Surfing Web: iPhone´s got the best browser ever on a phone, the most complete one in terms oh html, fonts, graphics, etc, and it also syncs easily with your pc bookmarks. You can browse a webpage by tapping, zooming and moving your finger, and also move through different pages like that. That makes up for the best ´surfing web´ experience on a phone. Don´t say its ui ´seldom´ comes into play, thats ignorant. STRIKE ONE.
2. Music: U can browse through all your songs and videos by just ´flicking´ your finger. You can search albuns through ´cover flow´ (animated flow of album covers). You can change your ´ipod´ shortcuts´just by dragging new shortcuts on to the main bar´. It syncs with iTunes which its really easy and stressfree to use, not to mention all the podcasts (audio and video) u can get with it. iPhone´s interface DOES make it easier and more friendly, together with iTunes. Thats MUCH better than ANY ´pc transfer suite´ out there for other phones and iphone´s ´media player´ also looks better and works better. STRIKE TWO.
3. Viewing photos with an iphone is also a unique experience because the screen is said to be very big, dense and bright. U can change photos by moving your finger and u can zoom in by ´pinching out´ the picture. The phone´s got sensors to adjust to screen when you move the phone. IMO thats pretty much better than any mobilephotoviewer out there. STRIKE THREE
4. 8 taps to make a call? WTF? Hit the phone button, 'flick 'through your contacts (looks very responsive and easy), hit a contact, press his/her number, done. Thats 4 taps, not 8. One could say there r phones that require less taps but u can also use the ´favorites´ on iphone´s menu to speed it up. iPhone handles sms as ichat conversations which seems to me as a great idea, being able to see the entire conversation instead of just one message. Thats just one example of how the iphone´s interface can make a difference. STRIKE FOUR
I´m not saying the iphone is perfect, its does have its flaws just like any other phone but to go against it like that without really knowing the product doesn´t make sense.

@SloopJohnB
The browser claim has already been proved to be nothing more than an Apple boast as S60 3rd Edition has had the Safari based browser for a long time already and does all that. As for Bookmarks again on my S60 3rd Edition device i have Mobile Bookmarks that appear in my IE favourites and all i have to do is copy the Bookmarks i want Mobile to that folder and guess what they appear on my devices as i certainly don't want all my book marks on my mobile device. The same goes for pictures i want to look at my pictures or show them to someone and going from thumbnails to full screen is all the functionality i need and i would imagine so would most. What do you really need all those zoom functions for? really it's just a gimmick and i just don't see it as being a big deal.
Not everyone either uses iTunes or wants to and transferring my albums to my device again is simple and quick as is adding Album Art and Podcasts both Video and Audio so again nothing unique or wonderful here either just great marketing. Also saying it looks better and works better is firstly subjective to each persons perception and as no one has seen it working yet merely guess work.
Making calls should be that easy and the sms feature needs to be supported at both ends and by both Networks so who knows how reliable this will actually be in reality.
Now having said that if you already use iTunes and a Mac this is obviously going to be a logical addition for you but it does have severely limited functionality and is missing the ability to add further 3rd party apps one of the biggest features of a smart phone IMO. I really think it is just a very clever iPod with added functionality for those that are happy with what it offers great. But a non removable battery and a few other missing abilities mean it will not suit all. But i have no doubt it will sell very well indeed as plenty of people will want one i just don't see it as this great revolutionary product and it certainly isn't 5 years ahead of everything else not even close.
