I think Apple have made a real error in releasing the Iphone without some serious GPS partners on board already. There's no real sense in the SDK restriction, and no good reason why the likes of TomTom, Copilot et al couldn't have been in the App Store on launch day, giving consumers both choice and confidence in the device as a satnav solution. As it is, all we have is halfbaked hints at what Telenav or TomTom may or may not be allowed to release at some unknown point in the future, which must be putting plenty of people off, or at least delaying a number of purchases.
If TomTom isn't readily available (at a reasonable price) by the time I'm ready to upgrade in October, there's no way I'll even consider the Iphone. I have TomTom working just fine on my current phone, I'm not about to downgrade that, or wait until Apple decide I can have it back again.

Going by past experience, don't be surprised if, when TomTom becomes available, it is more expensive than other platforms. Apple will probably want a share from the sales.

nav4all is pretty good juz dat my w960 have no GPS receiver... i thought it can use it like a google maps...

These companies would surely not spend all that R&D if they had no possibility of a return, so I would expect a true navigation solution for the iphone 3g before too long
in the meantime the google maps works quite well given its got no voice
But the point is there is still nothing apart from Google's nice but fairly hopeless free offering available now!

I don't recommend TomTom or any standalone units. I have telenav with AT&t and I can't live without it, literally. I have had a Garmin nuvi 750 and TomTom GO 720, and Telenav literally has at least twice the POI. I remember those expensive map updates too, telenav has FREE map, poi, voice, etc updates. I first saw TeleNav mentioned in the New York Times and then I went to their website:
www.telenav.com $10/month is a great deal, especially considering it offers more features than a $600 standalone unit.
