Asalam o alaikum warah matullah wabarkatuhu

An important message

"Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade eating of onions and leek. When we were overpowered by a desire (to eat) we ate them. Upon this he (the Holy Prophet) said: He who eats of this offensive plant must not approach our mosque, for the angels are harmed by the same things as men."
(Sahi Muslim, Book of prayers, Hadeeth # 1145)

An important message lies in this hadeeth for many of us, those who have a habit of smoking. Just like garlic and onions, smoking creates a very bad odor and if you come in the mosque while you just smoked, both the angels and your fellow praying muslim brothers are very much bothered by this. Please avoid this. Either smoke after the prayer or smoke a long time before the prayer and brush your teeth when you come in the mosque. Also the odor not only lies in ones mouth but the clothes are also effected.

May Allah guide us all and show us the right path.

I am intrigued to know more about what you call "harams" I understand that you cannot eat pork or drink alcohol and such other things as these are considered harmful. However there are many muslims that appear to smoke all around the world from many countries. Is this not considered Haram? After all smoking is very dangerous.

i just have one question that probably cant be answered! does anyone have any ideas why, it appears at least, that muslims in the UK are much more passionate about religion than christians? ive noticed that most muslim friends of mine do seem to worship regularly whereas christians it is more of a surprise if they do worship at all..

@Rachel
thank you for asking such an important question. I will try to answer your concern to the best of my knowledge. Couple of years back, the issue of smoking had mixed opinions among Islamic scholars. Some said it is haram and other said it is not. Those who say it is not haram bring forth the reason that since smoking was not invented at the time of the Prophet(PBUH) and since there is no Quranic verse or saying of the Prophet (PBUH) regarding this issue, therefore it is OK to smoke. But recently, more and more Islamic scholars are leaning towards the prohibition of smoking. I shall describe few reasons as to why.

Indeed there was no smoking at the time of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and hence no "direct" saying in this matter, but if you read and understand Quran, at times, it just presents some general guidelines regarding some issues rather than being specific. For example, Allah has said in the Holy Quran,

".... and do not kill yourselves, Allah is indeed merciful to you."
(Sura Nisa, Chapter 4, Verse 29)

and we all know that smoking acts as a "slow poison".

There is a saying of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) that

"Whoever consumes poison, killing himself with it, then he will he consuming his poison in the hellfire, and he will abide in it permanently and eternally."
(Sahi Bukhari and Sahi Muslim)

These evidence are enough to convince any muslim that indeed smoking is haram in Islam.

A person who smokes not only causes harm to himself but also to his friends and people who are around that person. We all know the bad odor caused by smoking and how a non-smoker cant bear that smell.

I cited a hadeeth of the Holy Prophet few posts back regarding this same issue,
"Whoever eats garlic or onion, let him avoid us and our masjid, and stay in his home. The angels are surely hurt by things that hurt the human beings."
(Sahi Bukhari and Sahi Muslim)
The reason for this is that both garlic and onion, when eaten, leave a bad odor in ones mouth therefore hurting the fellow muslims and even the angels at the time of prayer. Smoking falls in this same category.

Further more, Islam teaches us NOT to waste money on unwanted things. On the day of Judgement, every person will be inquired about how he/she had spent the wealth given to him/her.
Allah says in the Quran,
"...But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift. Verily spendthrifts are brothers of the devils..."
(Sura Isra, Chapter 17, Verse 26-27)

These are just few reasons of why smoking is haram in Islam. I hope this answers your questions. May Allah protect us all from the evil habit of smoking Ameen Sum Ameen

@siamese
I do not have any christian friend so I can't comment on them. But I do agree with you that Muslims over here are very much passionate about Islam. I think the reason behind this is that Muslims over here to strive a lot in order to follow the religious acts and worship. Let me clear things with an example, in saudi arabia, whenever it is time for prayer, all the shops close down and you have to go and pray. Where as over here, there is nothing like that. You have to "fight" against your inner conscience to observe the pray at the proper time. This creates an extra incentive for you to keep in mind the timing of prayer and other religious activities. Any other Muslim brother living here in UK can explain it much better than me.

Glorious Quran: Chapter 2 verses 172 & 173 state:

O ye who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided for you, and be grateful to Allah, if it is Him ye worship.

He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of Allah. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For Allah is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful.

The Holy Quran took 23 years to reveal in total

It was revealed in parts via angel Jibrael (Gabriel) A.S.

to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

During the periods of revelation, a few days passed by with no revelation, some of the non-muslims at the time said his God has left him! to this the Prophet (pbuh) was very upset.

Then Allah almighty sent Angel Jibraeel A.S. with the following Chapter:

Surah 93. Ad-Duha (The Morning Hours, Morning Bright!)

1. By the Glorious Morning Light,

2. And by the Night when it is still,

3. Thy Guardian-Lord hath not forsaken thee, nor is He displeased.

4. And verily the Hereafter will be better for thee than the present.

5. And soon will thy Guardian-Lord give thee that wherewith thou shalt be well-pleased.

6. Did He not find thee an orphan and give thee shelter and care?

7. And He found thee wandering, and He gave thee guidance.

8. And He found thee in need, and made thee independent.

9. Therefore, treat not the orphan with harshness,

10. Nor repulse the petitioner unheard;

11. But the bounty of the Lord - rehearse and proclaim!

Beautiful words from the Creator of mankind.

Alhamdolillah this is the 19th ramadan here in London. and last ten days are about to start inshAllah. Allah has set forth a blessed night, al-qadr in the last ten days of this blessed month. Allah has said in the Holy Quran

1. Verily, We have sent it down in the Night of Al-Qadr
2. And What will make you know what the Night of Al-Qadr is?
3. The Night of Al-Qadr is better than a thousand months.
4. Therein descend the angels and the Ruh by their Lord's permission with every matter.
5. There is peace until the appearance of dawn.

[Surah Al Qadr, Chapter 97]

Prophet (PBUH) was told about this night and when he was about to tell his companions, he forgot the exact date. Therefore, we muslims are told to find this night in the odd number of the last ten days. Most Ulama agree that it is the 27th. In my opinion, we should not give an exact date to this. If we think rationally, it was meant for the Prophet (PBUH) to forget the date in our own interest. Had the Prophet (PBUH) told his companions of an exact date, muslims would pray only in that night. But now, we are told to find this night. It can be either 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th. Hence rather than indulging in prayer for one night, we have the opportunity to pray 5 nights to find this blessed night in which if we pray with our heart , Allah will surely forgive our past sins, subhanAllah

May Allah guide is in finding al-qadr and guide us to pray as much as we can so that we can have our past sins forgiven. ameen sum ameen
