I think the real worry for Apple is the next flood of Android phones from the likes of Samsung, HTC and SE next year. iPhone 4S will be around at least until next May/June.
Plus you have Nokia with the W7 phones.
It really is all about innovation these days, you can't stand still with the same product. Look how many people are going to get the Arc S and that is only a 6 month gap.

@ Masseur - That i understand, i also understand that Apples brand is a strong product, a name by which companies can make money. But i think the drop in shares is probably down to companies, investors and shareholders backing their bets on the iPhone 5 which never materialised.
I think this has really dented the confidence of those who stood to make money from the iPhone 5, such as app developers, carriers, retailers and the fact the phone never came which they were waiting for, i think the prospect of the 4S being around for the next 12 to 18 months without any further updates of its hardware could put such people off getting involved with it.
I think this could actually be Apples biggest mistake yet, unless they announce an iPhone 5 around mid 2012.

@ Bonovox - I really wish it would.
As you all know here on Esato ive always been a Symbian fan. Ive been very critical of iOs and Android. Android this past 12 months has matured into a very attractive OS, to think in less than 12 months time it will probably run on quad core cpu phones with possibly even full HD 1080 resolution screens is ridiculous. But also my cup of phone-geek-tea.
Apple were always an amazing opportunity with their fluid interface ever since 2007's first iPhone. But, since 2007 they've only matured at a ever slowing pace. They bring new things each year, but they seem to fast be running out of new ideas and dont seem to want to compete in technology terms. Like rickster said, they're going to face a flood of Android phones in the coming months especially when ICS is released on phones like the Nexus Prime.
Geez, even Nokia are going to look fresh and new with their uptake of WP7 and features like NFC !!

Agreed. But I think quad core is a little OTT for a mobile device.

I'm not impressed with the iPhone 4S. I'll stick with my iPhone4. I'll ignore the 4S this year and most probably will looking at Nexus Prime.
The total event looked to me little bit non-excited.
Jobs is Jobs. Nobody can take his place at apple and that thing are clearly visible with today's event.

The smart move by Apple would have been to lower the price.
The problem is, the iPhone is still a premium product and there is not enough differentiation amongst it's product line.
SE are never going to compete with Apple, but that wasn't my point, the combined number of manufacturers like SE, LG, HTC, Samsung, Huwaei, etc producing Andriod handsets means that Apple needs something substantial to maintain it's marketshare with a very small portfolio.

Yes I think maybe a cheaper iphone for the masses would be good than having just one handset all the time. China,Korea & Taiwan are all throwing out Android handsets every month yet this is all that comes from Apple in 16 months.
