I think he means it uses a camera app.

Every review states that X Performance is just too expensive
for the features it brings and especially for the lack of some of them.
And I have to agree with that.
Lack of real Manual camera mode and weaker battery is quite annoying
where absolutely ALL the main Android players bring it to the tabke,
even the ones which were so far behind in this area (HTC, Huawei, others...).
It starts to annoy me, they basically revamped Z5 and made it a "new" phone.

If sony hasn't added full manual control to its cameras in 7 generations, wouldn't count on them adding to the 8th gen.

I think people want manual mode purely to check off on their tick list of features, I doubt many people use it. They should make a manual mode app available for download and leave it at that. Maybe if they made the auto mode ultra smart and effective, we wouldn't need the manual mode. I have seen the X Performance take better pictures than the S7 when I checked myself, cannot comment on low light but it was better in daylight for sure. That being said, it wasn't miles better so it really isn't something to be happy or sad about. Either way, they have that ultra fast focus and capture that is done before you have fully turned the screen on, that's cool. Movement tracking was impressive but not for really fast moving objects.
Battery life on all phones has dropped since I had my Z1C so much so that people are happy with less than one day which is shocking. We need thicker phones with large capacity batteries or have solar panels put into the case so it could charge a little. If they put a wind-up handle like they have on some torches, I'd be on that in a heartbeat.
The one thing that did strike me was how ugly it looks next to the XA, that should've been the design on all of them. For me, the X Performance shouldn't exist because the X does the same at a lower price. It would've been better to just have the high ends at IFA and low to mid at MWC. The way that the normal X performs next to the S7, it does justify it's price and I think people would appreciate that especially reviewers. I'm lusting for the XA but the chipset is a major turn-off and you notice the lower screen quality compared to the X.

I have no doubt X can perform great. That's why I miss full manual.
I really miss like 10s exposure time for night shots.
Or super fast shutter in some situations.

EXACTLY!
Their press release SPECIFICALLY stated no high-end this year because financial troubles and sales dwindling. It's BACK TO BEAN COUNTER (Accounting) basics!
R&D is all but shut down. Use existing money spent on last years R&D findings and fruits and publish into production if not already and REUSE RECYCLE and RINSE = Z5 REDUX. This SAVES on spending and maximizes on profits.
This is the 'TICK' cycle in production for Sony Mobile.
In other words this is the iPhone 4/5/6 ... wait for the equivalent 'TOCK' cycle (4S/5S/6S)

^I'm sorry but you're wrong. Here is part of an article published on XperiaBlog back in May "To be clear to readers, there will be no compromise in Sony creating a future flagship phone. So just because there is no Xperia Z series, future flagship phones will carry on via the Xperia X range, with no compromise in specifications."
The article is taken from an Asia tech meeting basically saying the Z series is dead and the X series will be until 2018.
Here is the link to the full article.

As they struggle to achieve desired market place and sales,
I don't think they are willing to compromise the quality, it's Sony!
But I believe they often SAVE on R&D and actually step back exactly when they should PUSH.
X line is actually very good, but with few addictions to boost the reviews,
and a little but lower price they'd succeed more. Or maybe it's just my naive imagination.
